Pentax have written back telling me that this is impossible.
They have also invited me to bring it in to thier local repair centre.
I will be doing so tomorrow.
I will keep you all posted.

I am awaiting their response and will let you all know of the outcome as soon as I have one to report.
Cheers all, and many thanks!
You are a great bunch of blokes.
With luck, I can avoid using the oxy-acetylene torch on my K-5 II...

It might be worth a call to CR kennedy, the Australian agents, and ask one of their tecks to advise you on a way out of your predicament, have found them helpful it might be a in-house repair but you will know the answer to the cost if they carn`t help.
Jack
Thank you!

I have tried everything I can, and to no avail.
I suspect there is something seriously wrong as I am able to close the door with the battery in upside down and this is not supposed to be possible.
So I have decided to shelve the camera and lenses until mid-January when my meagre finances may (and I must emphasise may) make it affordable to get a professional to look at it.
Thank you all -- I love this group and will be calling in.
Hopefully, things will improve once I can get this mess sorted out.

Just a thought, but have your tried talking to your household insurance company?
You may have a claim, depending on the sort of policy you have. It can only cost you the price of a phone call.
Theft, fire or most storm damage, yes, but not this.
