Does anybody know if a faulty 'automatic' setting on a 28mm smc takumar is easily repaired? Is it just a matter of bringing it to a camera specialist and getting it fixed relatively inexpensively?

Cheers,
Nick

Stephen,
I just re-read your reply - 5 months after you posted it!!! Sorry. I did in the end get a 28mm Super Takumar from ebay, sent over from Canada, and for penny's really. So I spent the summer with my 28mm and little-else. A real good lens- and a must more anybody I reckon!

I have another question now I think about it. Is there that much of a noticeable difference between a Super-Takumar, and a Super-Multi-Coated Takumar? I am in love (too strong?) with my 28mm, but was wondering if an 'upgrade' was necessary.

Also, does anybody know a good M42 range wide angle which achieves an aperture size greater than 16? The more I use the 28mm, at F16, the more I think how much better the landscapes would be using F22. I tried one such lens (I forget the name) a while back, but it was far too much distortion and flare to be of any use.

Having said all that, the final question now is- can I hold out against the draw of the *istD?

I have been using the Spotmatic SP for 7 months now, and am wanting to add a wide angled lense to my collection. But do not know which to go for, or for that matter, which lenses I can use with the screw mount fitting.

For starters, I am not to sure which length to go for (24/28/35mm)-is there a noticeable difference? Or does any body know if am I able to use a 28-80mm which will be far more versatile then a fixed focal length. Would they be hard to get hold of?

Cheers,
Nick

One of the advantages to going bayonet was an increase in the throat size from 42mm to, I think, 45mm. This enabled wider aperture lenses to be designed, such as the 50mm f1.2.

There isn't a ready made adapter to use bayonet lenses on your Spotmatic, but you can use your Spotmatic lenses on any of the K mount cameras using the Mount Adapter K. If you want bodies that are as close as possible to the SP, then look at the KM, KX and MX in particular.

As has been mentioned elsewhere in this forum, it could be conceivable that SRB could make the adapter you are seeking, but I imagine the cost could be quite high - the bayonet bodies are not too expensive to buy!

Alternatively, the SMC Takumar 28mm f3.5 screw mount lens is an excellent lens...
thanks- I just found out about the larger diameter after I posted my question.

I have been looking around for the 28mm SMC Takumar, and I havn't found any cheap (£65,£75-costly for a 30 year old lens...and I am a poor student) I guess that represents the quality! There are few other 28mm's for a lot less- Super Travenar, Optomax, Prinzflex. Any good? I understand the biggest problem in cheaper would be lens flare and barreling (and contast...and sharpness........) of which SMC Takumar has none. Does anybody know any of the cheaper alternatives which produce a reasonable quality?

cheers

hello all,
anybody know if there are adapters to put a bayonet lens on a screw mount body? If so, which bayonet lens range could I use for my Spotmatic SP (in particular, for 28mm) ? ???

Need Help!!

I've got a hand me down vivitar zoom, a very good lens and all in good condition other than the aperture 'selection-ring' (for want of a better word) gets really stiff. I dont know if anybody is familiar with the ring's design- a 1mm diameter ball-bearing, pushed up into the small grooves around the ring at the various f-stops as it is rotated. I have opened this about a half dozen times and tried to clean it out, and this seems to have an effect, but only for a short while after before it starts getting rough again. So I am pretty sure that it is just dust, or very fine grit or something getting into and around the ring. But I'm wanting to get it fixed permanently and not have to open it up and clean it out every time I use it. Any suggestions on how to clean it more thoroughly? Or is my best bet to bring it to a camera repair shop and get them to clean it out completely-I dont really want to waste my money if they just repeat what I do. ???

cheers,
nick
