Mine was essentially free as I picked it up as part of a twin lens kit with an SFX and a 70-210. I wanted the SFX and my dad wanted the 70-210, the 35-70 has languished unused until 3 weeks ago when I realised it slots in beautifully between my 16-45 and 80-320, and takes up almost no bag space being bearly bigger than my 50/1.4.

Perhaps watch the film bodies section of eBay, might show up as a kit with a SF or Z series body.

most of that size difference is because it's got a K mount, the NEX has a mirrorless specific lens system so the flange to film distance is much shorter, allowing the body to be thiner.

if a mount could be devised which allowed K mount lenses via an adaptor with full functionallity (auto metering and focus) then Pentax could conceivably do the same thing, but whether it would sell well enough to be worth the R&D effort is another matter.

the EOS flange to film distance is shorter than that for K mount, so no purely mechanical adaptor is possible to go EOS lens to K body without losing infinity focus, sadly.

Sometimes you get partially optical adaptors which do this sort of thing, but they act as short teleconverters and there is an IQ/light gathering penalty.

my favourite ones from Tesco are of the form "£1 each, any two for £2"

Certainly true, but not an offer as such.

Gamka, I couldn't believe how close we got to some of the animals, as you've spotted the Lion cub in #1 is a little way away so needed 300mm and a slight crop, but on occasions we got close enough that if I had opened the door I could have reached out and touched them. I'm not sure I'd have wanted to do it in an open sided Land Rover, ours was enclosed with a pop-top which gave a nice balance of the feeling of security and the ability to get an unobstructed view. Before I left I was concerned that 300mm might not be enough, but in the event I only wanted more once, and on that day even if I'd had a Bigma I still wouldn't have got the shot I wanted.

Have been on a Kenyan Safari with those "Pop-Tops" - courtesy of my employer! We flew to Nairobi and had to stay 3 extra days because of flights so spent our time "wisely".

I tend to find 300mm is often enough, and sometimes my 50-135 will do at night with the flash and some cropping to follow. Rarely do I move to anything larger or add the 2x teleconverter.
deffinitely a good choice of a way to spend your time, we spent very little time in Nairobi but I deffinitley felt safer with the lions on the Mara! I have one piece of advice for anyone thinking about going though:

Make sure you get taken out in a proper 4x4, ie either a Land Rover Defender or a Toyota Land Cruiser. They are capable of handling the terrain and a competant driver can put you anywhere on the Mara you want to go (and are allowed to go/can get away with going). A lot of the smaller safari outfits just have Toyota minibus things. Sure they're 4 wheel drive, but their wheels are tiny and they get stuck very easily.

We actually pulled one of these guys out while we were out looking for animals, then having pulled him out our Land Rover plowed right through the mud which had stopped the Toyota without even slowing down.

My policy on this is I never dismantle anything I don't know how to re-assemble unless

1. it is beyond repair anyway and otherwise going in the bin, ie I have nothing to lose

2. actually thinking about it, there is no 2.

They won't know anything about a Pentax... won't even have seen
one but they will steal it anyway.
If Pentax were do implement this alone, you would be correct, but if it were as ubiquitous a feature as it is in mobile phones it might have an impact.

I can't quite match that John, but if my lot all break out the cameras at once (and my uncle is over from Canada) you end up with one K10D, one K200D, two K-xs, one K-r and an Optio. Plus of course my Dad and I have *istDL2s which we might lend to anyone standing around looking sad because they don't have a Pentax to play with
