I have an 80-320, my Dad has a 55-300.

I will say before I start that I like my 80-320, it has given me many shots which I'm proud of and my copy at least has no zoom creep whatsoever, if anything the zoom is on the stiff side.

saying that, my Dad's 55-300 puts the 80-320 in the shade, especially at the long end. It is just better in every measurable respect.

Dad also has an f 70-210 and I'll agree with Russ that the 70-210 puts both of them to shame for auto focus speed.

I always remember when I got my first Sigma 70-200mm f2.8 from a seller on Ebay, it came with a Hoya filter. When I tried the lens every shot was slightly out of focus and just lacking the quality I expected so I was all ready to file a complaint and get a refund when I thought I would remove the filter and try a couple more test shots.

Suddenly the lens performed completely differently, the pictures were sharp and they had that punch I expected.

I have never used a filter since.
my FA 80-320 objects strongly to filters in a similar way. It is my experience that some lenses are perfectly happy to be fitted with a filter and others are not.

I tried not believing in fairies for a while, unfortunately they didn't stop believing in me, which it turns out is the important way around.

I don't know if Alaska is cold at this time of year, but I did notice when I used a K7, it became unbearably cold on crisp winter days... even through gloves the metal body sucked the heat from my hands. And your tongue would stick to it...
I suggest you get better gloves .

Never had a problem with the K-5 in winter in Norway.
and stop licking your camera!

tbh at this stage I don't care if you did it on purpose or not, it's hilarious (one l, I checked ) either way. Beer sounds like a good plan to me, it's past knocking off time.

DAMN I was so careful too! from this we learn, again, that it is impossible to pick up a minor mistake on the internet without the TCP/IP fairies introducing a similar minor mistake into the correction post.

edit: yup that's poor even by my own standards, I'm correcting that one

If Stephen Hawkins is on the forum he can probably explain it better.

pet peeve: the name of the great cosmologist who is confined to a wheel chair by motor neurone disease and seems to carry on living by the sheer power of his intelect alone is Stephen Hawking

unless of course you are referring to the Australian rower who won gold at the 1992 Olympics, in which case I appologise unreservedly, although I am confused as to how he would be able to help?

the only issue I can see with putting it on a Pentax is going to be physically attaching it, the pop-up flash/pentaprism housing is probably a different shape which might make matters difficult, or might not be an issue at all, deppending on how the mounting works.

the problem with the *ist Film is the crippled mount and corresponding poor backward lens compatibility.

I'd argue that the technically "best" Pentax film SLR is either the Z-1p or the MZ-6, deppending on your needs.
