Evaluative metering requires data which is only available from the A series lenses, I used to know exactly what but I can't remember, it might be something like the absolute value of wide open apperture.

I think froeschle is suggesting the user take over the role normally played by camera electronics in open aperture metering systems.

ie, meter wide open, stop the aperture down a known number of stops, reduce shutter speed by the same number of stops, shoot.

an excellent example of how a 5 minute e-mail can make your company look good, well done Sigma!

The first Crippled mount body was the MZ-50 (or possibly the 10? not sure about that one), all the A, SF and Z series bodies have a fully functional mount as do all the single diget MZs

I don't think it's fair to assume that all non-Pentax lenses are quieter either, older Nikon AF glass uses essentially the same screw drive as Pentax and even Canon users regard the silence of their Sonic drive motors as a selling point, implying that the non-Sonic Canons make a noise.

You can say that again...
well it's not, but the way some people talk you'd think it was on par with the average jet engine.

It makes a small mechanical wirring noise consistant with a small high speed motor moving medium sized opto-mechanical gubins as fast as is reasonably practical.

If you need silence, you need a lens with SDM/HSM which will have a price to match. If you're not photographing the inside of a library, it's really not worth the fuss it gets.

these days I find I rarely need GIMP, most of what I want to achieve is easily done in RawTherapee. Of course it deppends on what exactly you're doing at a given time.

I also use Hugin occasionally for Panoramas.

I use RawTherapee and GIMP, and for really tricky noise reduction I use NeatImage via WINE.

I don't know why people make such a fuss about the noise of the AF on screw drive lenses. No, it's not silent, but unless you're doing your photography in a library I can't see it being a problem.

The screw drive AF on the 55-300 is no louder than on any other screw drive telephoto. If you want silent, I'm afraid you're going to be paying quite a lot more.

I think the issue might be with your understanding of the tag rather than the camera:

my understanding is that the tag indicates the location of the 0th row in each dimension of the image as stored. If the camera is storing the image rotated such that this is always the top left, then the tag is correct.

I don't have my camera to hand to check the behaviour on mine.
