if you're going to build a RAID 1/5 array, buy identical disks from different vendors.

The disks should be the same make and model to ensure as far as possible identical performance, but you buy them from different vendors so that you get (hopefully) disks from different batches.

This way you drastically reduce the likelyhood of the scenario John describes happening to you.

I initially read the title of this thread as "advice on shooting back"!!

Your depth of field here is too shallow. You either need to stop down further or change the angle to get more of the beastie to fall within the DOF available.

just my 2 cents

Please can I make an appeal.

Bytes and bits ...

1 Byte consists of 8 bits but both start with a B. So there is a convention - bits uses a lower case b and Bytes uses an upper case or capital B.

Storage capacities are in Bytes - so cards are in MB or GB but data transfer rates are in bits per second - bps, kbps, Mbps &c.

The other is m or M - m means milli (one thousandth) and M means Mega (one Million).

There are a few little nuances as to whether kilo means 1000 or 1024 (and kiB/kib, Gib/GiB &c). But please remember the basics of b or B, m or M
I'm glad I'm not the only person in the world who is annoyed by this. Still given the number of people on computer forums who get it wrong I think it's likely that we'll have to keep on figuring out what is meant from context.

It seems we get to "Forum Veteran" status very quickly, should there be more ranks?
In my experience this forum is unique in only having two, everywhere else I have been a member there have either been several or none at all.

since you have the 10-20 for wide angle, you could perhaps consider lenses like the Sigma EX24-60 F2.8. A very nice lens and generally quite inexpensive, but whether the gap between 20 and 24 would bother you deppends on your personal shooting style.

total blackness is much less likely to occur than total burnout.

You can prove this for yourself by setting the camera to -3ev compensation. Shoot raw and load the shot into your raw converter of choice. By thumping the exposure right up you'll get most if not all of the detail back, though it will be noisy.

do the same thing the other way around and the result wont look half as good.

you've been spoiled by that Vivitar of yours! I know what it's like, once you've seen what a true macro lens is capable of you'll never be satisfied with a zoom at minimum focus distance again!

its a good shot though!

it's a standard hot shoe accessory so one size fits all.

Best way to establish that you want a new lens is to take photographs. If you keep slamming up against one end of your current lens's range and wishing you could go further, you might think about a lens purchase to extend your options in that direction.

If you can't visualise exactly what you would use the lens for, you don't need it.

At least, thats how I personally keep myself from spending every penny I have in SRS.

I used to drive past a house most Saturdays where the man would be outside polishing his Land Rover. It was a V8 Defender with wading kit and the works and I never saw a spec of mud or a scratch on it.

You get them in every walk of life and every hobby. All the kit, no clue.
