Apologies for breaking into photography-speak for one post:
SJ - same tripod and head as mine, and you won't be sorry. I avoid extending the centre column though, especially if it is gusty. You might be able to avoid the shakes with a sandbag weight hanging off it, although I've not tried that.
The centre column is useful in another way though, as at the top end of its travel, you can swivel it 'through' the head so that the centre column is parallel to the ground.

You know that reminds me, when I used TA Physics labs I said the same thing to try to get people to ask more questions. Obviously, some wise guy then said, "Where do babies come from?"
While not a salient question for a dynamics lab, it did loosen up the mood and people starting being more social.
