I have taken your advice and resubmitted the images as suggested.

if you still think the pen top need to go I will have to re-shoot as I don't have one with out the pen lid, when I shot this I thought the lid added balance to the pen and shot

I would like to insert this image for pure criticism as I think a experienced photographer would have the ability to express, compose and execute this set up and final image much better than me.

A little light goes a long way, again one snoot used and black reflectors sheet music was printed on ivory paper rather than white to avoid burning out and loss of detail. Inspiration for this shot was provided by my dad (he set the challenge).

Can I ask some question only because I'm a bit confused?

We are not allowed to post more than 2 images to a single thread even if the images fall within the allowed 800X800 pix
We are not allowed to degrade an image with a single comment most people find this disrespectful and impertinent
We now have to give an in depth dissertation on why we like/hate a image regardless of experience.
We are not allowed to post uninteresting images of a swan in a sunset.

I don't use any filters

however photoshop dose have it's limits and cost a lot more than a star burst and polarising filter

The images where uploaded from a laptop and as a result are displayed dark.

My laptop is one of those high glossy wide screen displays

I have now connected a second monitor to it and the display difference is around 3 stops
