Well one thing I'm pretty sure of is that you won't regret it. The K-5 is a beautiful camera and one that's always just felt right to me from the moment I first held one.

Yup you can pretty much get an actual Q for the price of the adaptor...

On a more serious note, when I was looking for a larger camera bag recently I had a look at some of the Billingham bags in a local camera shop. Nice, but exensive. Really expensive.

I ended up getting a Snapper Duo which seems very similar to the Billinghams and their ilk for a very small fraction of the price. It holds a mammoth amount of gear, too. Currently carring my K-5, 5 lenses, large Metz flash and tons of accessories (spare batteries, memory cards, cable release, P-TTL flash cable, wireless flash triggers, flash diffusers, gel kit, filters, Cleaning kit, etc. etc.)...

All that and I still have space left over for a second body, no problem. In addition to a second body I could also fit in a couple more small lenses, or alternatively swap out a couple of the smaller lenses I have for much larger ones. Oh yeah, and a smallish laptop as I don't even use the laptop pouch at the moment.

Mark, I dont have £600+ a month just to spend on camera gear.
Yeah, sorry, I reread your post and edited mine accordingly, evidently not fast enough though. See new version.

Dont think I have explained myself very well. We have been on a budget for a while (unemployed, have a disabled child in a wheelchair so unable to work myself) now (the past month) my partner has just become self employed as a DJ. We have secured a residency in a local pub as well as all their functions. I am setting up doing wedding photography and then we get the fantastic news that we will also be a further £600+ a month better off as well.

We have scrimped and struggled for the past year but financially we were surviving ( as in we werent getting in debt but werent having nice things in life). I dont have debts ( dont buy anything unless I can afford cash) so my partner has said that I can build up my lenses out of the extra money we will get a month. Thats not to say that I will spend £600 a month as it isnt always practical but it means if i see something I want I should be able to afford it.
Not too dissimilar to myself. Though I have full time job (on a salary that's not exactly fantastic) my wife is disabled and unable to work. Hence the budgetary constraints. I've built my current collection of camera gear up over 2 years.

Now I'm considering a second camera body in the near future because I've had the rare opportunity of a considerable amount of overtime at work, which has provided a handy one-off cash injection.

Your using the K5 yet your recommending the K30 ? Can I ask if there is a reason for this ?
What Pentaxophile said...

The K30 looks like 95% of the camera that the K5 is, at half the cost.
If the K-30 had been around at the time I got my K-5 with a similar price difference between the two, it would have been extremely difficult to justify getting the K-5.

Then again, I'm on a budget. I certainly don't have £600 to spare a month. I'm lucky to save £100 most months.

Better Shake Reduction?
Apparently the shake reduction system in the K-30 is exactly the same as the K-5, however CIPA altered the standards of measurement sometime in 2012 meaning Pentax had to change the advertised figure when they introduced the K-30. There is a discussion of this somewhere over on 'that other forum'.

(I was considering a K-30 as a second body at one point myself and I tend to research these things to death before spending any cash.)

Other advantages of the K-5 over the K-30 include:

- Better battery life (800+ shots vs. 400+)
- Faster maximum shutter speed (1/8000s vs. 1/6000)
- Marginally better continuous shooting rate (7fps vs. 6fps)
- More flexible auto-bracketing (max 5 frames vs. 3)
- Slightly more powerful built-in flash (GN 13 vs. 12)
- External Mic jack for audio recording

On the other hand the K-30, being a newer generation, has a couple of advantages over the K-5

- Slightly better autofocus system
- Better video recording modes

I'm not convinced any of the K-5's advantages will make a difference for wedding photography, apart from the battery life which will probably mean you want to look at getting 3 or 4 spare batteries instead of 1 of 2.

What might be slightly more helpful to point out is that Pentax have a planned 1.4x AF teleconverter on their K-mount lens roadmap for (possibly) sometime in 2013... or later. Okay it's a bit vague but I think that's as much as anybody outside of Pentax knows right now.

If the K-5's image quality is any better than the K-30's than it's extremely marginal. What the 14-bit vs. 12-bit RAW means, however, is that you're more likely to be able to rescue an incorrectly exposed shot in Post Production.
