Q: Is the vignetting more or less uniform at each corner of the image?

George, you ought to publish that and have Pentax attach it as a little 'sticky note' to all new cameras

Here's more living and learning Peter. All non-A lenses work fine in the Manual Mode (and Manual focus) with stop down metering using either the DOF Preview btn or the AE-L btn. As you say, using them in Av mode doesn't work unless you only want to shoot wide open. At least that is how it works on my *ist Ds.

I think that is what I have written, but slightly differently. I guess how one achieves 'stopped down metering' differs somehat from body to body and person to person. I simply use the 'green' button atop my D. I'm sure that the DOF and AE-L buttons probably work on the istD too, but I haven't tried.
It is very odd that, when using the pre-A lenses in Av mode, they do stop down . . . too late . . . after the exposure is made at full aperture. I can't fathom why.

Fortunately for me, I bought a new Super-A in the 80's and it just went on taking great pics. My next film camera was the MZ-S which I still have and bought after my Super-A became uneconomical to repair. Consequently I'm somewhat lacking in knowledge of all the other film models in between. I did have an MZ-6 for a while and an *ist (didn't like it, too small). Oddly, I was never compelled to have the latest & greatest of the film world. That's all changed with digital. I had my Super-A for the best part of 20 years. I kept my DS for about 18 months, and I've had the D about a year. Now I'm looking seriously at the K10D . . . and this is within 2 years of having my first Pentax Digital SLR (assuming the K10D comes out before next summer ).
How times have changed.

It is surprising to me how often this question, "Will my old lenses work . . .?" comes up, and "Will xyz flashgun work with abc camera?". Maybe there's a case for an FAQ forum for members to browse in read-only mode but maintained by forum administrators (as if you haven't enough to do). I'm sure many of us would have some sensible contributions.

In a nutshell, all SMCP-A series lenses (the ones with 'A' on the aperture ring) and newer will work with all Pentax digital cameras without a problem. If your camera has a custom setting to allow the use of the aperture ring in other than the 'A' setting, you can also use the aperture ring at any aperture (but frankly there is no need as you can set the aperture on the body).
All previous 'K' mount lenses will also work using Manual exposure mode and stopped down metering to set the shutter speed. These lenses will also work in Av mode, but the picture will be taken at full (wide open) aperture, the lens aperture does not stop down until after the image is taken for some obscure reason.
Old screw mount lenses will also work with a M42-K mount adapter in the same way but you have to set the lens to manual. If in auto, the lens will stay wide open as there is no actuator in the camera for the 'auto' pin.
Conversely, the newer FAJ and DA series lenses having no aperture ring will not work on film bodies where the aperture can't be set on the body (all of them I think).
