As you are travelling by bicycle, a backpack would be a safer bet, as far as balance is concerned

Ironically the swelling of fibres in cotton/canvas is something that aids water proofing and is the basis of how the old waterproof jackets worked. You do need a very fine thread cotton for this to work effectively though - and even then it will be somewhat damp inside so probably not what you want for camera equipment.

*IF* you want to faff around and risk introducing chemicals to your camera's environment you can get something called 'TX10 direct' from good outdoors shops. This is an exceptionally good wash in water proofer which will make the whole bulk of the fabric water repellent rather than just some silicon on the outside which will wear off in time. Or you could use both

If you aren't too worried by appearance, and short of cash, a candle rubbed over the most exposed areas of canvas works surprisingly well too.
I should have qualified my post by stating that ventile cloth when wet swells and inhibits water ingress, this will also occur on some other cotton fabric with varying degrees of success.

TX10 direct by Nikwax is good stuff, also it is water based but quite dear.

I do agree with other posters, probably best to invest in a new bag.

Cheers

What still surprises me is that some photographers will spend a small fortune on camera equipment, carrying about gear that has a value in the hundreds if not thousands of pounds [GPB] but carrying it in a bag cost just a few quid.

I am not referring to the Domke bag I still own one, but most of the Domke's are canvas whilst extremely durable are not in my opinion best suited for a wet climate.

I personally use Thinktank Photo gear, the bags are discreet and protect the photo gear carried, whilst the fabric of the bags would provide reasonable protection from rain or sea spray they do come with a separate seam sealed rain cover

Look at your gear and consider how you are going to protect your investment.

Any silicone based proofing agent would probably work, as this would enable the water to initially run off the fabric.

However with prolonged exposure to water you would find that the canvas fibres would swell, in all likelyhood water would start to get in.

IMHO your best bet would be a waterproof nylon cover with sealed seams you can make one up quite easily

Cheers

Back from trip to Ross Sea. After taking 3 cameras and lots of lenses, I mainly used K5-IIs, and K5 with Sigma 70-200 F2.8 HSM 2 Macro and Sigma 17-50 F2.8. Occassionally 18-55 WR kit lens. Also used CP filter almost always. Longer lens than 200mm would have been good for shooting wildlife on the pack ice.

Excellent images. Any problems with cold temperatures?

Thought I would share a picture of my Spotmatic II and ME Supers.

The Spotmatic came courtesy of Paul aka 9erfan, the ME Super on the left (which is for sale soon!) has been with me a while whilst the ME Super on the right is my latest edition and the 1983 body is NOS so is in stunning conditon.
Very nice indeed. I also have an ME Super, although I only use digital these days.

Cheers

I am not surprised smaller photographic shops are disappearing at a rapid rate.

A few years ago I went into my local photo dealer for a jobo dev tank, although I could have saved a bit buying on-line, I wanted to support him, well not only did he want to charge the full price, he also wanted me to pay a premium for getting it in, I went to Amazon.

Buying kit on-line, is not too onerous these days, with plenty of reviews, but we have excellent retailers, such as SRS to help.

When I wanted to buy my first DSLR [Olympus E1] I went to my local jessops, they wanted me to part with a 25% non refundable deposit, on top of charging full price, no wonder they went down the pan

I also sold my Canon gear a 40D & 500D plus lenses and flash, to buy the K5. I prefer a camera body that is substantial and not 'plasticky' referring only to the 500D not the 40D.

In particular I appreciate the weatherproofing qualities of the K5 as I am keen walker and I like to take a camera with me. In the fairly short time that I have had the K5 it has not disappointed me, I was also surprised in the relative quality of the kit lens [18/55] although I am looking at the 18-135 as a possible replacement.

So far so good.

Cheers

Many years ago, when I had my trusty MX I submitted a B & W photo to the Pentax Family magazine, much to my surprise I received from Japan a ballpoint pen engraved 'Pentax Family'

I found the pen, but can I find the photo, can I hell, probably got lost when I moved some years back.

Does the magazine still exist in paper form, or digital.

I wonder

Merry christmas and a happy new year to all
From the [not so] sunny south coast
