Antarctica 2013

Back from trip to Ross Sea. After taking 3 cameras and lots of lenses, I mainly used K5-IIs, and K5 with Sigma 70-200 F2.8 HSM 2 Macro and Sigma 17-50 F2.8. Occassionally 18-55 WR kit lens. Also used CP filter almost always. Longer lens than 200mm would have been good for shooting wildlife on the pack ice.

Sounds like a great place to have cameras. I like the first shot but did a check on the levels as the white didn't seem correct. It's a tad shy at the top end and improves the image noticeably when pulled into line.

Best regards

Hi K10D
That photo of the Crabeater Seals on an iceflow was 200mm/F4.5 and 1/1250secs. Presumably with CP filter. At 68Deg 13Min South. Problem was the very white snow. I wanted detail on the seals and a touch of detail on the snow. The Albatross are also difficult to get the levels spot on. Cape Petrels (not shown) are almost impossible with a mix of dark brown and snow white colours! The seal photo looks OK on my monitor.
Cheers

Excellent images. Any problems with cold temperatures?

"Excellent images. Any problems with cold temperatures? "

Surprisingly little. I had 5 x K5 batteries. Always kept a spare in a warm placed pocket, and would rotate batteries when they showed low power. However, the "low battery" would recover on warming and be rotated back into one of the cameras.Ditto for GPS battery. Fogging of lenses was not a problem either. Modern coatings? Did have a CP filter on almost 100% of time.
cheers
