Hi,

here's a shot from the Lake District.. I'll add a couple more later, but this isn't that bad (this is my own opinion, and not necessarily that of pentaxuser.co.uk)

Hi all,

having over 1100 photos to go through and process (not all, thankfully, but a fair few) this week, following my sojourn to the Lake District, I've decided that there is one thing missing from my DL, and as far as I know all DSLRs. That is the ability for the camera to know whether I'm shooting portrait or landscape. I use Ulead (v8.0) to download my images from the card, as it came with a P&S camera, and I can just run through and select the ones for rotation as a batch job. It chugs a bit but does the job eventually.

Wouldn't it be so much easier if there were some device inside the camera that could check the orientation, and then tell the primary software to produce it accordingly. Obviously the good old mercury switch is going to be illegal by now, but I'm sure there must be someway of doing it without our beloved leaders in Brussels getting their knickers in a twist, and it would save so much time, especially for those of you that do pro studio work, where many shots are portrait, and time is money.

Just a thought. Any other ideas come to mind as you work?

No problem JC,

without that, the browser is looking for an image inside the pentaxuser domain to display. The http:// bit makes it look to the whole of the www for it.

I would think so. It's a fair bit of pressure coming out of the hose.. think how long it would take to blow up an air bed with a little dust blower, and you can guess the difference.

I'd stick to slow but sure myself.

BTW, you forgot to put http:// before the link for the image, hence no image.

Hi,

you can test continuity with a bulb, battery and a bit of wire. Test bulb as you would normally, by touching the ends of the wires together (creating a circuit, to make sure it works first.. ) and then test the leads by putting them in the circuit.. probably again with a needle on one end to get at the contacts inside the female connector.

Hi,

are the extensions stereo or mono? the stereo one (which is what you need) will have two insulating bands around the male jack, as there are three wires (left, right, and common) these are needed for half depress for focus, full depress for shutter release and again a common.

If you only have mono it is probably!! only going to operate the shutter, but it needs to do the half depress on the way, I think.

If you do have stereo, then check the continuity of each path with an avo meter, set to measure ohms. You should have, with only a slight change in resistance, the same reading as touching the two avo leads together. You may need to attach a needle to one lead to get inside the female end of the lead.

Hi,

you need to use a program specifically designed for RAW data files. Have a look at this thread..

https://www.pentaxuser.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2640

which will give you an idea of what programs there are. Most. if not all will give you a free trial period, so you can have a play. Have a go, and be sure to ask here if you have any questions.. which you will have.. I think Matt (he posts in the thread I've linked to) is the main expert here with RAW files, and he will help you every step of the way.

Hi Ken,

can't help.. sorry. I just had a look at the specs of each, and the only thing I can come up with is that the S50 uses 12 bit jpeg, and the DS uses 2.21 exif. I was looking to see if the S50 used 16 bit and the DS 12 bit, which may have explained it, but that didn't work.

I think this is one for Matt, or one the other techies here.

Sorry Don, I've only ever spent a day using Knoppix off of a CD, to try to rescue some data of an old PC, but that's perfectly useable as an op, even from the CD. Obviously it'll run a lot faster from the HD.

I think one of the later Redhat variants, or Suse seem to be the most popular from what I've read, but again, I've not used them. I know there are a couple of Linux affionados around here, so hopefully they'll see this thread and jump in.

Cheers
