. . . the seemingly better exposure control especially the flash exposure, which is a phenomenal leap in accuracy. Here are two shots, one from the K20D and both camera and flash both set to 0 EV and the same with the K7. Both with AF540FGZ attached with a Gary Fong Lightsphere attached. Generally, with the K20D and the above set up, I would need to dial in about +1EV on the flash and up to +1EV on the camera. The K7 needs neither!!
Is this a good thing? I'm not sure. It means that if your hobby or job requires you to have two cameras, you'll need two identical models. At least I can get by with a K20D and a K10D because exposure wise, especially flash exposure, they both behave the same way. A K-7 with a K20D backup, for example, would be a nightmare at a wedding reception shoot. You'd need different camera/flash settings depending which camera you were using.
I can see that if you have a K20D and flash as a back up to the K7, then this could pose a problem, but I think that to get accurate exposure has to be a good thing and we can't keep going along with an inaccurate flash system. The buck has to stop somewhere and it has stopped with the K7 and so now we can concentrate on all new models having very accurate flash exposure.

If you have a K20D as a back up with flash and a K7, also with flash, then the idea is to have the K20D with +1EV on the flash and some on the camera and just leave the K7 as is.

The major issue with the K20D was more so that the flash exposure was haphazard in it's results and that I needed to dial in all different exposure values in order to get good results. It would seem that the K7 overcomes this to a large degree.

I agree Lance you make a very good observation with regard to the improvement in accuracy of exposure. The shots I have taken out doors with the K-7 have been close to spot on. However the K20D consistently requires a boost in CaptureOne.
Having said that I don't mind a little underexposure, occasionally yesterday I found my self dialling in -0.3EV with the K-7, perhaps a subconscious act to mimic the K20D output

I have not tried any indoor shots with the AF-360FGZ yet but like you I had to dial in +1EV with the K20D, I'll give it a go with the K-7 later on today at some point.

A thumps up for the 100% VF too, I actually have the O-ME53 Magnifying Eyecup eye cup fitted, it makes for an excellent combination
I'm using the O-ME53 also.

Just wondering what new adopter's impressions were so far. I picked mine up yesterday from SRS. My impressions so far based on very limited use:-

Built like tank with pleasing functional styling both with and without the grip.
Love the handling.
Layout of controls is easy to get to grips with.
Camera operation is very slick.
3” screen is a nice improvement.

I like it a great deal

From what I can tell high ISO looks no worse than the K20D but I've not done a back to back comparison at this point.

Only slight negative is that I'm concerned about the longevity of the rubber covers, particularly the one that covers the USB, HDMI and external power supply connectors.

Now I'm just waiting for PhaseOne to release an update for CaptureOne4 to support K-7 PEF files.

Very nice pics and an excellent demo of the increased capabilities of the SR...and you have an amazing collection of glass...next one on my list is the DA35 Marco but will have to wait until i have got over the shock of paying full retail for the K7....initial impressions is that the SR is not the only improvement delivered by the K7.....thankfully it looks like our faith on Pentax seems to have been rewarded...cant wait to get a real project to stress test it!

Thanks for the shots

Stu
Thank you very much for the nice comments, Stu.

Yes, I agree, the K7 is quite an amazing piece of kit. Oh, and when you do get your DA35 Limited, you will also be very impressed, I'm sure!

You might want to look at Lemkesoft's "Graphic Converter" shareware (http://www.lemkesoft.com). It imports and exports over 200 different graphic file formats, and I know for sure that it imports Pentax PEFs. This is from Lemkesoft's website blurb for Graphic Converter:

Many digital cameras can create raw files.
The following formats are supported:
• CRW - Canon
• CR2 - Canon
• NEF - Nikon
• DCR - Kodak
• ORF - Olympus
• X3F - Sigma
• RDC - Rollei
• RAF - Fuji
• SRF - Sony
• PEF - Pentax
• MRW - Konica/Minolta

Great photos!

Good luck!

Bart
Thank you for the info and the nice comment, Bart.

Silkypix Pro RC (beta version) supports K7 PEF's. As a Silkypix user, I downloaded the Pro RC beta version last night and it works like a charm.

Good clear shots and sharp detail. Sorry I pestered you earlier this week about pics lance, well worth waiting for.

Did you get the new 18-55WR lens or just the body?
No problems about the request, Dave. My pleasure to help out if I can.

Thank you for the kind appraisal, too.

I only purchased the body. If I were to purchase a lens with the body, it would have been the DA17-70 f4.

All DNG files converted in Capture One pro, so there may be more noise than with a dedicated PEF file. Unfortunately, I cannot do PEF as there are no RAW converters (that I know of) that will convert K7 PEF's other than the Pentax's own software.

Lightroom recently got an update to handle the K-7 files.
Thanks for the info, Mike, but unfortunately, I do not use Lightroom.

I do use Capture One Pro and Silkypix and Silkypix has released their trial Pro version which now does K7 PEF's, so I have downloaded that. Looks great so far.
