Is SR better on the K7? a few "test"shots

As some of you may know, I picked up my K7 earlier this week. The only chance I have had to give it a real blast was late one afternoon at my parents house down the south coast from Sydney. They were feeding the kookaburra's some fresh meat and I was able to get these photos.

The thing I was wondering is if the SR works better on the K7. Here are some pics I took today with the K7 and the DA*60-250 f4 and when you apply the 1/focal length x 1.5 rule, there are some impressive results. All handheld with no support.

All DNG files converted in Capture One pro, so there may be more noise than with a dedicated PEF file. Unfortunately, I cannot do PEF as there are no RAW converters (that I know of) that will convert K7 PEF's other than the Pentax's own software.

Crop of above. As you can see, I focused on the beak more than the eye, but it is still sharp at 4.5 stops of extra handholdability!

I have no idea what you are talking about, but having spent most of this morning trying to get some in focus shots of Goldfinches without success, I love your pictures

These images are pretty good . And of course the 60-250 helped the quality but looking at the shutter speeds you used I am absolutely amazed, handheld with those shutter speeds


PentaxBabe, did you use tripod or monopod while trying to shoot the goldfinches? It helps tremendously using tripod, unless you have steady hands like a few members here we know that shoot pretty sharp images without one. My bird shots come out pretty rubbish without tripod.

I haven't had any time this week and the weather as you know hasn't been helpful,

Initial thoughts are very good. Have you tried any video yet : picture quality looks very good.

BTW what part of the Sth Coast were these pics taken : My parents also live down the sth coast "Wonoona" and they get a few Kookaburras in there yard, as well as a host of Cockatoos and parrots.

Lightroom recently got an update to handle the K-7 files.

As Amin has suggested, a monopod or tripod will help. Having said that, it does restrict you a bit but also I gather these birds will flit around quite a bit and a tripod will be too constricting. A monopod will help a little but the main thing is to use a very fast shutter speed, like 1/500 or 1/1000 especially if you are using a long lens like a 300mm. This will mean you may need to up the ISO to 800 and shoot in reasonable light.

My parents live in Vincentia and like your parents, they feed the kookaburras, butcher birds, lorrikeets, king parrots etc on their back balcony.

I do use Capture One Pro and Silkypix and Silkypix has released their trial Pro version which now does K7 PEF's, so I have downloaded that. Looks great so far.

I only purchased the body. If I were to purchase a lens with the body, it would have been the DA17-70 f4.
