I'm the opposite, I hate carrying flash and the GPS to me is a badly implemented Engineers solution, basically raidng the Pentax O-GPS1 GPS Unit gubbins from the parts bin and squashing it into the prism housing, no expense spent. Sensor tweaks? the sensor and imaging chain have not changed, there is no difference in image quality, firmware tweaks? Not impressing me so far, bit narked with Ricoh actually, they have never explained things like the "Ideal for sports" focus system and now they reckon they have improved it with some fancy algorithms! From what a baseline of we're not telling you, to a new high of it's better but we're still not telling you why.
I'm not holding my breath on finding out what that brings, my feeling is a big fat zero.

All because of a new camera with a bit bigger sensor and a little bit less noise on the horizon they have gone into Nikon, deliberate hobbling mode to keep the K line down, K3 II is not an upgrade, in fact it has me re-thinking my future buying plans.

You could hang on for ever and something else would be just on the horizon. I think sometimes it's possible to lose sight of the fact that cameras are intended for shooting images and they do that rather well already. I'll bet very few of us actually use such huge dynamic ranges, which in themselves already outclass anything that was possible with film.

What's most important is the visual quality of images, and this is one area where Pentax have always seemed to be able to pull more out of Sony sensors than Sony can themselves.
On this occasion having seen some specs for the sensor I couldn't agree less John!
However I think this one will be a 12 bit sensor so no 14bit files which have a fair bit more headway for fiddling, more of a K50/xxx than a K3.

Agreed, and include Astro Trace and improved SR.

I bought the K-3 II with the pocketable AF201FG WR flash. Much rather mount a flash for the odd occasion when I use it than have a 0-GPS permanently fixed to the camera.

Others doubtless prefer the opposite, it depends on your preferred subject matter. For me it's mostly landscape and architecture.

What's really good is that we currently have the choice, and at very competitive prices - especially for K-3. Choice is good, something to celebrate.
I agree with this, Ricoh should offer the K3 with the GPS and the 16-85 in a kit, to clear out the stocks of the body and the GPS, likewise they should offer the K3 II, in kit form with the 16-85 and the lovely little AF201FG WR flash.

Leaning towards K3-ii as I virtually never use flash and would definitely use the astrotracer and pixel shift. Logic tells me that I should stay with APS-C and ignore the siren call of full frame, but probably going to delay a purchasing decision until I find out more about pricing and specs of the upcoming FF. I actually don't need 36, 42 or whatever megapixels, 16 from the K5 is fine - but I do use all of the K5's dynamic range on occasions, and the slight step down from 14.1 ev for the K5 to 13.4 for the K3 is a concern. Wondering what the FF dynamic range will be? If its the same sensor as the A7R that's 14.1EV also.
Enough ramblings

Perhaps yuo should just hang on a bit?

Personally I've found the superiority of the K5 senser against the K3 to be rather overstated, when you switch on the highlight expansion on both (Yes it affects RAW)
there is very little difference in practice, the K5's ace in the hole was ISO 80, which does show improvement and I really do think that the K3 should have been able to support this, it's a bit of a daft omission really, as the sensor is quite capable in this regard...

You may have a problem there as I don't have one and tbh I can't see me bothering for the foreseeable future. Seems to me it's more of a K-3I.5 than a K-3II.
More of a K3 - IMHO, can't blame you one bit Mike tbh, they had to hold back to make the "FF" seem more whizz bang when it arrives, wait a year and we will be able to get that new Sony BSI in a Pentax, that would be pretty good I think.

And to keep it legit, some info he recieved from Nikon and Ricoh...

See John, Ricoh, so you have to keep it in!

Despite the claims from Ricoh, there are no AF improvements, none (Period) or full stop if you prefer

A few decent you tube vids would do
Official ones from Ricoh to explain how when and why to use the features.
Surely they could get Kerrick James or someone for that?

Not missing, was never there on the K-3 II - pay attention Ken!

And
"Pentax copied Nikon's flawed power switch. It's easy to knock on or off because it has no lock."

Nonsense they copied nowt. And I've never knocked it on or off on any Pentax DSLR I have.
(The K-01 is a different story though)

"The Menus are an uglier version of Canon's general layout. The font is fairly primitive."

He's a total idiot.
'Font is fairly primitive?' wtf sort of comment is that?

And this proves that KR is the most idiotic 'reviewer' on the web;

"Pentax makes no professional DSLRs and no full-frame DSLRs. It's sort of an orphan brand, now owned by Ricoh."

Laughable clown who has zero understanding of what professional actually means.

And finally.
"Canon and Nikon make better and more refined cameras for the same price"

They don't and well - we know who pays KR don't we.
+1 Steve!

Some cross-over here with our ' instruction manual' thread! If people are not realising the potential of their cameras, then definitely I think the manufacturer must step up into the educator role somehow. Thanks for clarifying those manual settings.
Amen to that Nigel, I think we'd all like to see a proper guide on Flash, especially when you take into consideration the new meter on the K3 series, it's very different! Focus, well don't get me started, I've used pretty much every Nikon since, well, for a long time! So I'm pretty used to complicated Focus set ups and how to get the best from them but I'm still trying to work out the K3, the paucity of information from Ricoh, is an appalling error. They have turned what on the face of it, is a much simpler system than used by the big two into an internet free for all, just thru lack of information, they say it's ideal for sports, so show us! In my Nikon years I used to do a few sports (Motorcycle racing) workshops etc, now it used to turn out that around ninety percent of all the focus problems I encountered from participants were due to user error, where they just ignored Nikons own instructions where focus was concerned. With the K3 series and I do sincerely wish, not the FF (Still hate that term), we really do not have a baseline? It's very difficult to fathom out a focus system without a real starting point, D- Ricoh!

I'll take Mike P's K3 II when he decides it's no good for airshows!
Other than that I'll just take the original since it's in my bag, the "upgrades" (I don't regard most of the so called improvements as upgrades) are not worth the £400 it would cost me to trade up, given my usual cost/benefit analysis. If I had niether, I'd still take the original as it's an absolute bargain now and I have no need of a Gps over the built in flash...
The other so called "improvements", are not worth snuff in my photography, save maybe 30 quid for the improved Sr which was already good enough anyway...
