Given that Mike has probably owned an example of every single K-mount lens ever made and now going through the Canon EF lens catalogue I'm not surprised his lenses are used sparinglyI am surprised that Mike doesn't use his 16-50.

Yes, I'd put the Nikon 24-120 and the Pentax 17-70 on the same level in all but build.
My initial feeling is that the 16-50 does indeed have "Pixie Dust".

Well I'm just beginning that journey of discovery George but my initial findings seem to mimic yours. My idea of a direct comparison with the Pentax 17-70 F4 SDM, may not happen as my "other" 17-70, is currently touring France for a month and the current user has offered me good money for it. Indeed very time he emails me, he ups his offer, I don't think it's coming back! None the less. I think myself and the 16-50 are going to be very happy together, with the added bonus it will keep me away from those pesky Limiteds

3-4 stops, so soon Smeggy, bit of a mountain to climb? Maybe a K2 then?
And a KO for all the Full Frame Hard Men?
I seriously would like some more glass alternatives from Pentax, some of the road map items look good but there's a bit more to do there still. If the roadmap even counts anymore, I have no idea, it's still on the website at Pentax UK, so I'm hopeful. I'd like Pentax to do this in increments but slightly bigger ones than they have been doing, they need a competetive AF System. Not to say that it's actually that bad in the new K5's, it's not but they need to play the numbers game here or be different. However that doesn't need to mean, different by being two generations behind, everyone else (Retro?). On chip AF does give some scope for innovation, that maybe contrast detect didn't? If they came up with something really good for the next model (K3) and suddenly they could be King of APSC? Then out comes the FF Lens Tri-mester (Summit to 24/28 24-80/90 and an 80-something All F2., along with the FF K1. Simples...

The one big negative seems to be the shadow detail, anyone care to comment? Is the old one the same? Anyone even seen the new one yet?

Oh Giorgio, don't get me second guessing my return to the fold
Seriously the bottom line is that we have no idea what Ricoh has planned for the K mount, only that it's their descision what happens next. I have high hopes but I guess we could all be wrong? As long as it's not the same as Sony's takeover of Minolta, the A900 was a tour de force of design and function, every inch of it cried Konica Minolta and quality, since then they seem to have been flinging mud at the problem to see what sticks, they have integrated and disbanded pretty much all of the DSLR Design departments they inherited and have spread it to the four winds, a lot of the DSLR guys are now designing compacts and vice versa. However they may have just invented the sucsessor to the DSLR I believe but they've gone a messy way about it. Minolta Owners get no support anymore despite Sony promises to the contrary, and I suppose some would argue, why should they? SLT Owners are starting to wonder what they got into, Nex owners barely get time to learn how to use their Cameras before a new model appears, it's a conveyer belt juggernaut, monster and a disjointed, convoluted, confused, one at that...
I like Pentax, I like their design philosophy, and I want that name on the front of my Camera, whatever it says on the bottom...

Bin there done that.
Unlike you though I still have nikon, Sony and Olympus to go
Finances will preclude me from doing it again for the forseeable though...
P.S. Belting image...
