We all like to have alternatives throughout the wide to mid range and so often just buy a long zoom to cover the rest, not thinking that a lighter long reach capable prime can have just as much utility as a wide prime at the other end of the scale. I've never really considered the 150-500 but looking at your wildlife shots, It can't be a bad Lens at all! I just need your and Mike P's Jedi-esque hand holding techniques...

From Asahi Man over on the Sun readers site.
He's usually pretty reliable isn't he?
Guess that makes me a Sun reader!

And so what if I like Boobies
IMO you would be better off looking for a used Sigma 100-300mm f4. Fills your gap nicely and very good with a 1.4x/1.5x converter. On the downside they are very hard to find and be prepared to pay top money for a nice copy. I could possibly put you in touch with someone on here selling one (not me, I'm keeping mine and will probably sell the 300mm in the near future).
As for the DA*200mm, fantastic lens but unless you have lenses to cover the range you are looking for you will probably end up thinking the same as you do of the DA* 300mm.
As for the 50-500mm, well you know my thoughts ... fantastic lens in good light and as Pentax have nothing remotely like it in their lens lineup (unlike Canon, Sony and Nikon) the only thing that comes near it for versatility are the other large Sigma's.

Don't want another 60-250 just to fill the gap as A: I think it's too expensive for what it is, and B: Well it just didn't wow me the first time round really, not fast enough for really great compression effect nor long enough for great tele reach. Sharp though but I hardly used it at all, my heart lies with the DA* for gap filling but I am not really in a position to get enough cash to buy one currently.
If the new 50-500 is good enough in your opinion, I may try to go that way to get my kit complete and up and running...
Just after some advice on it really, had the old one in Nikon fit a long time ago but before Image Stabilisation and I wasn't too impressed, it may well be a different kettle of fish with IBIS in the equation.

Since I only ever shoot outdoors, I have never noticed any problems with either of my previous K5's, that said I'd also like to be confident it would stump up the goods if I ever decided to do any studio/still life/general indoor work, has anyone else noticed this with a K5, or was it just Benjamins? In either case Pentax France really let him down it would appear, Nikon D600 Autofocus is in another league however, so perhaps this has some bearing on his new found love. It always makes you feel better when you diss your old girlfriend.

My gut feeling is that the next Pentax DSLR's will be superb, just like the K-5 was (and is). I really don't think the current K-5II and K-5IIs are much distant from a FF camera in performance and resolution terms, at least for any imaginable use that we would put them to.
However, regardless of how superb they are, they will not challenge Canon / Nikon for sales in the short to medium term. It would take a very sustained long-term effort, maybe 10 years plus, with a huge gearing up of the marketing / support infrastructure behind the brand to make big numbers of serious photographers consider switching. Personally, I don't care whether or not that day comes because I quite like Pentax as they are.

David
Such is the problem with words. They can be taken to mean different things depending upon our viewpoint, unless the context is very clear. Solicitors make a living out of this.
What I would like to see is that SD card door opening wide enough to allow easier access to the SD card, but it's just a dream....

Found this Artist type at Drumburgh, wish I could have managed to get a better representation of what he was painting in the background but I really didn't want to tee him off as he was concentrating!

My usual shot of Port Carlisle, I use it as a bit of a Lens test, this time for the Siggy 8-16, I like to see good detail in the old harbour wall, then I'm happy!
