John, although I've already spent it £349 is a fair chunk of money and I am still debating the value. there needs to be £349-worth of difference between an image taken with the TC and the same image taken without and cropped to the same size. At the moment I haven't fully accepted the fact that there is.

If it was a 1.7 or 2.0 than I think it would be more difficult to get the cropped image to match up.

I shall continue to try it with all my lenses (once my camera is fixed:roll and post as many observations as I can.
Did you get the TC at discount (£349)?

Anyway, I also did the cost benefit analysis when I was trying to choose which K5II variant to buy. Went for the K5II instead of the K5IIs and put the £150 'saved' towards a Fuji X20.

No regrets, but then since I don't have a K5IIs to compare against I wouldn't know if I should regret buying my K5II or not!

I hope Castle Cameras quote of £80 was because they hadn't seen the camera and were assuming it was actually the hot-shoe itself that needed replacing. If not....
He did look at the camera, so I am going to get one of those covers at Castle cameras or from Microsystems.
No excuse then.

I find the more recent comments in this thread regarding the marginal benefits of the convertor vs.cropping interesting, so it beggars the question who or what Pentax had in mind when developing the TC.

For my own part I am watching with interest as I was considering the TC principally as a 'boost' to my 100mm macro and 300 mm lenses, but now I'm not so sure it's going to be as good as I was hoping.

Most feed-back from purchasers points towards it doing what it says on the tin, but only here are people questioning whether it's actually worth getting the tin!

It seems the mount has been damaged, in which case the force to do that would be transmitted via the attached lens, so whichever lens was on at the time will also need checking out.

I feel for you.

Covered under home insurance?

Buy it on a credit card? (some have hidden benefits including insurance during the first x months after purchase)

Assuming it's mint condition, I'd be looking for a minimum 20-30% 'discount' against new price.

You are, after all, losing all your rights under warranty and various consumer protection legislation that you would otherwise have if buying new.

I'm getting a little concerned about your description of the damage, Aura. There are no exposed screws in the hotshoe, for example, but there is a perfectly normal hole for a (flashgun) locking pin in the hotshoe. See here;

It would really help if, as said previously, you could post a shot of the damage before taking it in for repair.

Are you sure it isn't just the hot-shoe cover that's gone missing? (see jeffstclair's first shot).

It'll need a professional repairer. Search this forum; there are a few mentioned who can quote.

I can only imagine the camera hit something?
