Well with a bit of searching i have found a UK retailer selling a used Sigma DC 17-70 F2.8-4.5 for £150. It's the first gen model with the slightly slower optics and no HSM motor. But seems a good price.
I've read somewhere that the older model was better IQ wise, I'll try and find the link/s

I'm not sure about the K5 but my K20D stops down in 1/3 stops, maybe it's one of the options I've set in the Custom menu.

Just a thought. If the previous owner was using it on an early pre SDM Pentax it could appear faulty to them?

I haven't got one so not sure if it is screw drive compatible but I've presumed it isn't.

It does have screw drive compatibility unlike the DA 17-70 which is SDM only.

Wow that's a big saving on the genuine TR3 and oh so handy, always wanted an external pack but couldn't justify the expense, thanks all.

I can't find the link now but I remember reading about this a year or two back. I think it's something to do with the focus point not necessarily being the same at different f-stops on some lenses, due to various aberrations.
residual spherical aberration, quite common on some older Nikon primes.
