If still available, I could use the 35-80mm.

You would use exposure compensation when in, say, Av mode. You wouldn't use it in manual mode because you simply change the setting yourself directly. The camera can make an adjustment in the auto modes, depending on which mode and which values are fixed.

Exposure compensation can be very useful in auto to make adjustments for particular subjects, for example to keep very dark subjects from being reproduced too light.

Completely different.

There are three parameters we can change. Aperture dictates how much depth of field we have. Shutter speed dictates how moving objects will be frozen sharp or not. ISO dictates the sensitivity of the sensor and therefore the amount of noise (grain) visible in an image. If one is changed, to keep the set exposure then another will have to be changed the opposite way to compensate.

Exposure compensation makes an exposure lighter or darker by changing one factor without the others moving. So, if the aperture is a set value and the ISO is a set value then exposure compensation would alter the shutter speed.

Hope that helps!

Back to the For Sale thread please! Let's not hijack LennyBloke's thread.

There is a place for both natural light and artificial light sources, but the difference for me is between continuous lighting and flash, rather than natural lighting and flash.

Continuous lighting gives very different images to most flash shots, not least because the light sources tend to be larger than the point light of a small flash unit. Sudio flash is something else, and very versatile.

Personally I prefer continuous lighting with reflectors where necessary and sometimes studio flash.

A useful "rule of thumb" to maximise depth of field by using the hyperfocal distance is simply to set a small aperture such as f/16 and focus about one third of the way into the scene. It works and doesn't need lots of calculations.
