He had initially considered just Nikon and Canon but I suggested he look at others including Pentax. He has now come round to the view that there are other good brands around and has been out to see what else.
I take it he's been into Jessops and talked to the 'experts'?

With that much money to play with I'd agree with John, going as Oggy says for the 300 option.

When he can use the camera and produce consistently good shots then look to buy better.

If there is better than a K7 on the APS-C sensor!

Aperture Priority on Pentax goes back to the ME, an Av only camera that was (and still is) a joy to use.

Most people said it was a bad idea back in 1976, but they also said that TTL metering was cheating, that 35mm was dieing...

Keep using it, we all do!

Never been to the States.

But we have been stopped my UK customs, they wanted to know where we'd been.

When we started listing the countries we'd travelled through the guy stopped us, thanked us for our co-operation and let us go.

Another Bank Holiday over, it's back to work properly today, and the sun's shining.

It's amazing how many are owning up to owning canon DSLRs.

The impression I have from playing with anything below a %0d is of poor feel and build quality, That's only my impression before anybody starts a war here!!!

In my cupboard is a pile of cameras, nearly all work and those that do have had film through them to make sure everything's OK.

Current favourites are the MX and K110d for manual and MZ-6 and K200d for autofocus.

The XAs are brilliant for slipping into a pocket and doing a bit of 'street' stuff.

Oh yes, there's a P&S canon in there as well, it works but the zoom is noisy and slow. We've had it from new, it was the only option at the time.

Very interesting, my Honeywell Spotmatic needs re-painting.

It's already a black one but in a very sad state, so...

Most are aware of the recent updates Ian, I did my K200.

Although the statement "Improved stability of recording image for some SDHC Memory card" appears on all of them Pantax seem to have taken the opportunity to address other problems with various bodies as well.

I'd recommend updating if you haven't already.

Nope, it's more than charming. It's good value, excellent food and great atmosphere.

That and one of only two in Bradford to get in the guide.

I'd give it the Pentax seal of approval.
