Congratulations on your new camera!

The bean bag is for resting the telephoto on when you can't use the tripod. On the car window or roof or on a rock for instance. It provides a steadier base.

Which big tele lens have you ordered?

No mention of a vertical grip on the Samsung. And Pentax is the marque that uses the SMC. So the Pentax is for the serious photographers. But the Samsung, with it's well-known consumer name, is going to attract the well-heeled hobbyists.
If it really is a clone then maybe the Pentax grip fits it. And nothing to stop the "well-heeled hobbyist"from sticking SMC lenses on the front of it.
I'm neither a "serious photographer" or a "well heeled hobbyist" - just a hobbyist who has to save hard for new gear, but I'm not sure I would choose the Samsung over the Pentax, unless the price difference is significant.

And to be honest I think the really serious photographers have Canons or Nikons, probably full frame, - not Pentax.

If you are happy with the D why replace it immediately?
I am happy with my Ds for now, and whilst I would love a new toy I can't really justify yet. I am dissapointed in the expensive battery, but the other points don't worry me - I have SD cards, and can't use wireless flash without another unit so..... And I can understand your frustration about the grip, it would have been nice if they had been compatible for you.
I know people who want the K10D badly enough to have already ordered it, but others are hanging back until they can actually see it, handle it (even though they have seen it and handled it at photokina) and even read reviews of it. Some are even convinced the price will drop over the first few months....
Me? I'm going to save my money for a bit longer and then maybe just maybe I'll get one.

Gwyn, PSE4 is what I have but it doesn't appear to recognise PEF files. How do I get it to do so?
Sorry Barry jsut read you question. I have PSE 4 too and although I mostly shoot jpgs (too lazy to faff with RAW) I have used it for RAW conversion and it recognised the PEF files without any problem, so I can't help you with that one.

Ah I see others have come up with the reason

If you have PSE 4 you can convert your RAW images using that, and do basic manipulations of the RAW image. Not as good as a dedicated RAW converter but better than the Pentax software.

I too love your photos. I can see Scotland will be my next holiday destination If only I could be sure of a bit of sun and no midges I'd be happy

I am happy with my kit lens too. Some of my best photos were taken with it. That and my Tamron 28-300 are my favourites, not that I have a huge collection, but those are the two I use the most.

Size doesn't matter - it's how you use it

I've just come back from Dixons (no relation to UK Dixons), where I printed out a load of photos for a course I'm following. They are all jpgs that haven't been through PSE or anything, so straight from the camera.
Because I'm a technophobe I asked the salesman for help with the Kodak machine.
When the first photos rolled out of it he asked me what camera I have. A Pentax *ist Ds I replied. He then said that he had never managed such good colours with his Canon dslr. Then came the photos my OH took with his little Canon - ah said the guy those are Canon colours!

He bought his Canon because he got a discount from Dixons, but now he is thinking of upgrading it he is going to look at the K10D when it is available
