Someone must have told Pentax it was my birthday today.. Hurrah.

A very quick test this morning and it seems better, I won't say perfect yet. I'll play more later. My wife is gonna love me if we go out for a meal tonight and I take the K5 with me... lol.

No probs. Nothing worst than going out on a shoot and not realising you've left the camera in the wrong mode for 50% of your shoot... lol.

Enjoy.

On my K5 (and previous pentax) I press menu and then move to menu 5 and there is a sub-menu called 'memory'. If you enter this you can select what the camera remembers when it is switched off. I normally have mine set to reset most things, but retains drive mode, playback info and file no.

I would think it should the same or similar on the K-x.

Hope this helps.

Here are a couple of examples of the front focusing found on my K5 under low light. It is easily repeatable and only live view or manual will overcome the issue. The left image is through the lens (TTL) and the right image is using live view (LV). No PP except cropping. Both sets of images are focusing on the same spot. The assist light was disabled.

The only other thing you might consider doing is to phone JP Service Solutions and ask them.
Unfortunately JPSS want the camera to 'inspect the unit'. No confirmation that they could fix any front focusing....

Don't get me wrong its a lovely camera in normal light.... The High ISO appears to offer so much more flexibility to work indoors and at low light but whereas I could shoot photographs of my kids indoors on my K7 TTL, with the K5 I have to use the Live View as a work around or a P&S camera.

Is it a design flaw/hardware issue or will a firmware update fix it? Only pentax know. I would rather they came out and said 'our next firmware will rectify the known FF issues' or 'send them in to get fixed'.

John, I have been discussing it with Chris at SRS. There are 'rumours' that the next firmware fix will solve the issue, unfortunately the fix was 'due' three weeks ago now...

There seems to be a lot of mis-information flying about whether all cameras have the issue or only some. Some people have been blaming 'user error' which I find unnecessary. I am very tempted to get it repaired/adjusted however if its all cameras then surely its pointless returning it.

As such I have been waiting patiently for this new firmware fix (and dropping emails to Chris every so often to get feedback if I need to return the camera).

There are always some issues in specific circumstances. It wouldn't put me off, and it won't, because I don't use AF is marginally lit situations. Even if I did I would be happy that if it wasn't that, with some other camera it would be something else.

My K20D doesn't lock focus in all circumstances, but I work around it when that happens, so it's not a problem.
Thing is John that I'd be happy if it was marginally lit situations, but I've tried photographing indoors, early morning with light streaming through the window with a fast lens (which was enough light for my k20d and K7 to focus in) my K5 will front focus when shooting TTL.

If however you shoot the same shot using the Live View - bang the photo is correctly focused.

Anything less than EV 4 and I get front focussing. I'll post examples if people want....

Pentax need to get a firmware fix out soon or atleast need to announce if some cameras require repair/replacement.
