Great set of images for IQ evaluation. Thank you very much for your time effort and trouble.

I reckon the Pentax 300 Da will be the one for me.
Thank mate.

60-250 or 300 ..both are great lenses, do you need the flexibility ? If not then the DA*300 is a wonderful lens.

The old F 70-210 appears to do really well, I always new it to be a good lens but never tried it with a TC.

This lens surprises me John. I got it in a package I bought on EBay and although I've hardly used it I can't bring myself to sell it .. yet. Sharp, fast AF but ugly as sin and noisy. Still an excellent lens though.

The Kr is a generation ahead of the K7, has a newer sensor and far better low light/high ISO handling. If you don't need the WR then it's a great camera.

I haven't any experience of the Pentax 300mm lenses but have had quite extensive use of the Sigma 2.8 300mm and the 120-300mm lenses and although they produced excellent results most of the time they were way to heavy to lug about on extended walks to photograph wildlife.
Having switched to Pentax I'm currently using a humble Sigma 70-300 base model and I'm quite impressed.
I will probably look at replacing this lens very shortly but what to get? Mmmmmmm!
If you want a zoom then consider the Pentax 60-250. It is a great lens and at it's best at 220-230mm (then crop to 300mm perspective) you'll then get a far better picture than the consumer zooms (Tamron, Pentax, Sigma) can give you. Much weightier (1,230g) than your current lens (530g) but much less than the big Sigmas (300/2.8 = 2,400g and 120-300/4 = 2,600g).

After 2-3 years of what I think is steady progress with my wildlife photography I am perhaps losing my obsession with sharpness. I have craved the DA*300mm, hired one and loved it. But to be honest in good light it's not a million miles different to the DAL 55-300 or the Sigma 150-500mm. I doubt the DA*300mm f4 + 1.7 tc will be sharper than either the above but certainly a nicer size than the latter.
I am trying to value composition and interest more than sharpness now.

get the 2.8 if you can. you need the extra stop to produce sharp images at such focal length
Mate. The DA*300/4 is eye-bleedingly sharp (except at f2.8 ) !

No experience Ron but you can buy the adaptors as I've seen them advertised. Leica R and Zeiss MM lenses can be converted to PK mount too if you wish to do that rather than use an adaptor.

Check this link out. This guy uses a K5 and transfers via eye Fi straight to an Ipad2...

Ipads are great but do not have inbuilt usb ports. Although you can buy a connector to overcome this.

I personally would go with an Android tablet for true tethering...

Hope this helps.
It IS true tethering (though a little slow if you use full resolution files) ! I do the same thing with my eyeFi and iPad/Laptop though haven't found a use for it in real life yet. I was thinking I could use it as a back-up system for my shooting on a proposed trip to NZ (from the iPad I could then send it via iCloud to home and also drop them into DropBox for redundancy.

OK this is not going to go down well.

Very beautiful shots of birds ...... as opposed to beautiful shots in themselves ... until we get to my favourite (#9) and despite myself the stunning Nuthatch shot. Why do I say that ? Like taking pictures at the zoo for me the best bird shots are those that have no man-made object in the frame.
