I am looking for a cost effective long lens.
There is a lovely green wood pecker that regularly feeds on the large area of grass outside my office window. It is extremely camera shy (my colleague says it is a female!) and my current 150 to 300 Sigma is just not long enough.
I would be very interested in an un-loved 500mm lens that needed a new home!

Look for a Tamron BB 500mm - supposedly the best Mirror out there. I have one and have found it excellent value for money and, like the Op. with his mirror, it can produce some excellent sharp shots.

So how will you feel if your lens gets a knock strong enough to break the filter, and the lens is damaged by flying shards of glass. It does happen.

The supplied hood should be all the 'protection' you'll need in 99.999% of cases.

My opinion: Modern lenses do not need cheap pieces of glass to protect them, moreover, cheap pieces of glass (in relation to the lens price) often cause more problems than they are worth. Increased flare and internal reflections being the main ones.

Just use and enjoy it, you don't need a glass condom on your lens.

If you know that you are going to be exposing your lens to potential harm, then a filter fitted temporarily may be a good idea. Otherwise, no. It will, in anything from a very small to a very big way, degrade any images you capture.
+1 on all the above.

Johnha - todays' coatings are tough, you are not going to damage the DA*300 with a thumbprint, water or even cleaning (unless you use some cleaning agent to clean it with that you shouldn't) they are All-weather lenses after all

As Mike said, 1/15 @ 600mm is impressive (with or without IS) !

#2 is lovely (Chaffinch ?) and so is the Greenfinch (which is very very different to ours over here - I like ours better, more colourful)

Congrats on your new toy !

Nice shot Mike. I often see them doing this .. I guess it is just regurgitating stomach contents.

The 55-300 is clearly a better lens than the Sigma and since Tamron don't have a 55-300 then it's obviously not rebadged either.

This opinion on the 55-300 punching well above its price weight is not held on just this forum but as this question comes up frequently you can try googling other Pentax forums and you'll find the consensus overwhelming (I'm on 5 forums). It is a bargain for the price and they don't coma around that often !

Maybe this testing I did last year can reassure you to a degree :

Assume you are looking for zooms (which are not at their best at 300mm) and not primes (which are)

The 55-300 is the best consumer zoom available for Pentax - though it's better at 240-260mm and cropping than at 300mm (the difference from ca. 250mm to 300mm is really minimal in effect terms).

You have a very deep hood on the 300 (I have one). I have never used a filter on it and it hasn't even come close to a scratch (and I'm a birder - crawling through woods etc.) ;

Of course I can understand you wanting to protect your new baby from the rigours of the world - nothing wrong with that
