Jalal - I think you are better off shooting in TAv mode. Let the ISO float up to whatever you are happy with as a max (I used 1,600 on the K5). Pigeons are very fast flyers and you'd normally need more than 1/800 to catch them sharp, try 1/1600 to start with perhaps.

Alan - I tried the Q with the DA*300 (no sighting scope) and found that in practice it was impractical for my type of bird photography (just far too slow to set up, acquire and shoot - must be on a time or remote) however if used in a hide and pre-focused on a known perch (e.g. kingfishers) then it could be useful.

It can only be down to neglect of AF performance as a priority. It's one area where Pentax need to raise their game considerably to get more inroads into the pro-market where shots can't be missed and the job needs to get done. Sports, papparazi, gigs and so on. As a hobbyist people shooter I would also like a much more response and accurate AF.I'm not sure it's neglect so much as a different priority Smeggy. Pentax don't have long or fast sports/wildlife/bird lenses so, as the famous (or infamous) tests carried out by that French magazine showed, they seem to prioritise reliable focusing over speed of focusing. In that test Pentax came out ahead of all other manufacturers in % of shots actually in focus (it was a high % but I can't remember or find that link - maybe someone else can), it was in the 90%+ I believe. Maybe this is the micro-focusing we often hear from Pentax lenses (I found the Sigma's HSM faster and without the micro-focusing) which also detracts from the locked-on focus speed.

One example of that is my mate who takes fantastic wildlife images with his Canon 600mm f4 and 1.5 converter reckons the 7D is crap above ISO 800.If I had a US$10,000 600/4 I wouldn't be shooting with a 7D :D

As the OP who has now having seen the result from Nikon 300D shot compared to my failed one could one of the experts suggest an improved technique or settings for me. I was, incidentally going from being focused on the ducks to them following take off so there wasn't a massive change in focal distance. My camera would still have been on AF centre spot. WOuld I be better off with lots of focal points and the 'C' setting. This was with DA*300 and K-30 by the way. Thanks, DaveThere is the potential, if you use your shutter release button for both focusing and releasing the shutter (it's default postion), for losing focus at the critical moment or failing to lock on because you have the 'do not fire unless in focus" (focus priority) setting enabled (again that's the default). If you remap your focusing to the AF-S button and leave the firing of the shutter to the shutter release button, plus change the setting to shutter priority instead of focus priority, then the shutter will fire independently of the focusing button (now AF-S) and you will get more shots because the camera is not waiting for focus confirmation - which is sometimes the case that even though for a fraction of a second you had the bird in focus the focus confirmation could ignore this because you lost focus again. This allied to burst mode should give you more keepers.

After recently trying and failing to focus on some flying Black headed gulls in decent light, I've decided the K-5 + D*300mm just inst up to action shots. Its fine for birds like red kites and a marsh harriers which fly slower, if they are not to close, but the AF speed and tracking cant track faster bird or slower ones that are too close sadly.Neil. Gulls shouldn't be difficult, they are large and relatively slow moving. It's possible there is a problem with your technique or settings. Can you tell us how you hold your camera, whether you use a tripod/monopod and the settings you generally use for bird photography ? I used the K5 and DA*300 for 2 years (with and without the AFA x1.7) and found it very good on larger birds, it was on smaller birds with frenetic feet, or flushed birds, where it had difficulty. In all cases a degree of anticipation is required though. Here are some samples all with the K5 + DA*300

I still haven't found them ! Where are they ?Look at the far peak in the middle of the picture. Below it is a steep snow-filled valley with a flatter area beneath it and to the left. The climbers are there and going up the valley. EDIT: might help.Thanks Was. !

an awe inspiring image- got the climbers in the end. The "bunting" are little sheets with prayers written on them by the local sherpas intended to protect those on the mountain, the gods don't always answer though.There are climbers !?! :shock: I still haven't found them ! Where are they ? Brilliant pano.

I thought it was a quite useful post, and a very positive assessment of the K-5's AF capabilities. I think a comparison to a professional FF camera with a reputation for excellent AF speed gives a good measure of where the K-5 stands. And considering its price and other positives, it gave me a feeling that it's a great choice for everything except perhaps birds - but that we knew already.....Thanks Giofi. I'm not trying to blow any horn but in this instance at least I thought it was what the OP was looking for, a valid comparison.

It is a complicated question and will undoubtedly depend a lot on exactly what is being tracked, how large it is in the frame, which lens and camera combination are being used and, for sudden changes in subject distance, where the focus was in the first instance (e.g. were you shooting at the MFD and then suddenly to a BIF at infinity) and of course the distance from the shooter (smaller object). Having been paid to shoot a fair few sports events I would have no hesitation whatsoever recommending the K5 for rugby (which I shot),, football, tennis (which I shot), hockey, X games (which I shot), motor racing, moto-cross etc. etc. In my first year I used 2 x K5 with the Sigma 50-150 and DA*300 and they performed very well indeed, the failure to lock focus was relatively far and few between, I'd say a 90%+ success rate. Last year I also used the Nikon D800, Sigma 500 and Nikon 80-200 in addition to the K5 kit. There is a distinct advantage in AF speed with the Nikon, even when used with the 500 (the 80-200 is lightening fast). I would often be shooting with the 500 and put it down to pick up the 50-150 (which with HSM is a little faster than most Pentax lenses) as the players came close to my pitch-side position and the speed difference is noticeable, but that said the K5 didn't fail me and no make/combination has a 100% success rate. So yes, the Nikon AF is faster (and their 300 primes, whether f2.8 or the f4, are all very fast focusing lenses) and there are/will be instances where it will get the shot and the K5 would miss, but they are usually specific circumstances and the K5 will get 90% of the shots the D800 would. Of course that 10% is part of the reason I added a Nikon kit - birds are tough when they suddenly take flight from the bushes !

I absolutely agree Chris - we all have differing taste. However it was your comment that ".... higher colour contrast makes them much more 3D than the German lenses" that I would dispute. I've seen wonderful 3D rendering from many lenses, including Zeiss, e.g the ZE/F II 100/2, to name but one, is simply spectacular in this regard.Contrast is what makes lenses 3D, the difference between shadow and highlights, how continuous tones are rendered is more important for this than how much resolution a lens has which is important mainly for defining edges. Pentax (and others) went a step further and made 'soft focus' lenses (never popular and as rare as hen's teeth to find) which deliberately sacrificed even more resolution to get even finer graduation in tones, they rendered tones more accurately, more subtly. A weird combination of sharp and soft, difficult to describe, has to be seen. Your Lensbabies have gone down this same path to some degree. Finer resolution tends to render tones more 'blocky' more 'posterised' for the most part. Of course Zeiss lenses have contrast, all lenses do, but it's far less subtle and not as wide a variation as the Japanese lenses. It's generally agreed that Japanese lenses have a greater contrast range than German lenses. You notice in my descriptions how there are few definitive terms, many are in inverted commas, it's all comparative. Unfortunately lens test only look at the absolutes, things that can be measured, I now take these lens reviews with a pinch of salt, they are accurate for what they are, but they don't tell you the whole story, they often throw the baby out with the bath water (if you see what I mean). Most of their parameters can't measure other aspects which are every bit as important to how a lens performs.That last paragraph is spot on Chris. Sites such as Lenstip, for example, go as far as to stress that point in their testing. However that said it is far too simplistic to say that 'contrast' per se is what is required for a lens to demonstrate 3D rendering and there is always debate when this subject arises as to which photographs are 3D and which aren't ! Whilst the opinions on what is required for any lens to produce 3D images is even more diverse. Suffice to say that contrast alone is not the sole requisite, distance from subject to background and from the subject to the lens, angle of light source, sensor size, quality of light, separation of the subject from the environment (often of course easier with wide aperture tele lenses or indeed just a tele lens) and many other factors are often considerations. It is not a pure science and that is why I said that Zeiss (Contax and ZF/E) lenses demonstrate some superb 3D rendering, the 100/2 I mentioned especially but the 35/2, 35/1.4, 50/2, 50/1.4 and 85/1.4 are superb too as no doubt the new 135/2 is/will be. For indisputable examples please just take a look at the very long Zeiss threads (there are a few) in the Alternative Lenses forum at FM. Those examples showing 3D rendering just jump off the screen.

Excellent ! Great sequence - love the action. Pheasants might be as common as muck to some but personally I don't see them that often and from a photographic standpoint love them, they have gorgeous colours when seen up close.

I think many people would strongly debate those assertions Chris. I have (had) 5 Zeiss lenses and not only is their sharpness jaw dropping but their rendering exquisite and the 3D is certainly there if conditions and settings are conducive (as they need to be with all lenses that offer 3D 'pop').It's not an assertion Frogfish, it's a generalisation. For me most of the German type lenses look too, for the want of a better word 'clinical', sometimes that's exactly what you want, but not always, at other times you want a more 'dreamy, misty' look with morning mist and very diffused light for instance. Sometimes 'tack sharp' is not what you want. The German manufacturers, with their usual Teutonic efficiency, went with what you can measure, mainly resolution, lines per mm. The Japanese went with a more aesthetic mandate and produce lenses that render better, don't ask me to define 'render' there is no S.I. unit for it LOL. Most lenses are 'tested' on a flatly lit 2D test chart, so the 'measurbater' lenses win every time, mainly because contrast doesn't enter into it much. But illuminate a 3D subject with 45 lighting (which is what photography does most of the time) and the aesthetic lenses begin to shine (pun intended) through, higher colour contrast makes them much more 3D than the German lenses. They are much more pleasing to look at and seem to have more 'pop', at least to my eye. I think many people would strongly debate those assertions Chris. Whilst I no longer own a Pentax camera (I'm skipping this K5 generation, I'm sure the next one will be something special) I've kept some 'special' lenses, liberally dusted with Pixie Dust, that I won't sell : 15 Ltd (fitted with an invisible polariser everything that comes out of this gem seems to have been already processed for colour and sharpness), 43 Ltd (my first Pentax lens, bought before I even had a Pentax camera. Stunning sharpness, rendering and functionality). 77 Ltd (is there a better portrait lens ? I've not seen one, this produces magic in my eyes) The other two I've kept are the Cosina 55/1.2 and Lensbaby set, both specialised lenses with an output unlike any other. I agree MF on moving Girds is tough :D With MF it is best to pre-focus on a spot (at f8 to f11 if the light permits) and move your feet a small amount as required to pull the bird into focus, take multiple shots. Not cropping too close can also improve perceived sharpness.

There are two perspectives here (excuse the pun), that of the photographer and that of the birder. Pic 2 is better for ID purposes and as a behavioural shot as the food matter is clearly visible. However the human eye prefers landscape shots (which is how we see the world) over portrait so that is probably why your friends prefer #1. Pic 1 is aesthetically more pleasing due to the snow covered branches being more in focus (again something your friends can appreciate). The perspective really depends on the action (or lack of !) of the bird, so sometimes a portrait shot will suit the subject better, however in most cases you need to give 'room/space' in front of the direction the bird is facing, so shooting in landscape is more often used. I often see people try to crop too close in bird shots (something I have also been guilty of) however a more pleasing shot can usually be achieved by encompassing some of the environment, especially when it is attractive (as you have done in shot #1) or provides a pleasing bokeh.
