Lovely shot Don ! We call them Japanese White Eyes over here and yes they are very cute birds.

Sigma's 120-400 isn't their best lens whereas the Pentax DA*300 is a superb piece of glass. You could easily crop it to a 400mm FoV and it'd still be better than the Sigma.

I had five batteries for my two K5 cameras (2 originals and 3 Chinese copies). I honestly couldn't tell you which I had in at any one time, they all worked well..

For the price difference I could buy 4 copy batteries to one original.

Take a good pair of binoculars too - when birding if I can't get the shot (or for IDing the bird) I use a lovely pair of Pentax waterproof bins.

A 300mm f4 and 1.7x teleconverter (if you can find one) is going to be approaching the £950/1000 mark.
But if you buy used then you can get all/most of that back again on your return.

Milamber - you are going on what for many would be the trip of a lifetime, pack less clothes and a pair of shoes less, then beg, borrow (rent) or steal the DA*300 + AFA x1.7)

The WR will come in very handy in those dusty conditions where you don't want to be changing lenses if you can help it.

Low light will kill many of the suggested lenses - f2.8 to f4 max !

The DA*60-250 is supposed to be FF compatible (according to Pentax) but I don't think the DA40 is.

When using a FX camera in DX mode the VF image doesn't change but if you are lucky there are guidelines
