Wild mammals in Shanghai - wonderful ! Today I went back to my favourite birding haunt - Shanghai Zoo - to see if I could find the Hoopoes again (no luck - too many people as tomorrow starts a public holiday). Instead I amazingly found 3 Raccoon Dogs, happily living in the wooded areas of the zoo.

I should explain, Shanghai Zoo is an incredibly interesting place, not like any other zoo I've ever been to. There are more areas set aside as huge public fields, copses and ponds than there are for the exhibits ! You should be able to see this in the plan below.

Instead of my usual spots I decided to walk around and see if there were any other areas I hadn't yet explored. There are little tracks and paths that lead you to the most unexpected places, canals with a felled tree across it, wild overgrown ponds and walks through 10 metre high bamboo which you exit onto yet another small private field.

However where the Raccoon Dogs had set up home was not even in one of these secluded areas - it was on the bank of a canal, 35 metres to a zig zag wooden bridge on the left, 70 metres to a small humped back bridge on the right, 50 metres to a public pathway , through dense woods, behind them and with the canal and a high hedge shielding them from a children's horse riding track in front. See the two location shots below.

The only way the Raccoon Dogs could be seen was from the Zig Zag bridge - if you knew what to look for or were just downright lucky or if you pushed through the hedge on the opposite side of the canal, and there was no obvious reason for anyone to do that ..... so I just got lucky. I got their attention for these shots by, I guess we can call it the mammal version of 'phishing' for birds, just by emitting a few high pitched squeaks and smacking sounds from pursing my lips ! The stood up to see what the strange sounds were then promptly settled back down to enjoy their sunbathing again.

Hope you enjoy this amazing discovery at least a little bit as much as I did !

Finished sunbathing for the day they headed back home whilst I was working my way around to the opposite side .... until next time, the pups should be born in April or May !

Very nice set indeed - guess someone is happy with his new lense !

#3 is the standout shot, but #5 & #6 are quality too.

There was an article in a camera mag last year about how to waterproof a Canon with a large piece of polythene and two 100 CD/DVD used tubs/spindles
Or you could just make it look new again (and WR)... .. take a piece of plastic and a hairdryer and ....... you get the picture, they do it all the time on Nathan Road, TST, Hong Kong !

K10D - Yes, the top Canon / Nikons are WR however it is the degree to which they are water / weatherproofed that is interesting. I saw a comparison between the 7D and the K7, the 7D has fewer seals and those seals are not of as good a quality (being compressed foam) as the K7 (being rubber). The first time I've ever seen an explanation as to why the WR on Pentaxes is better and maybe a reason as to why it is marketed as a feature whereas on the Canon / Nikons it isn't.
Just one of many threads link

I'm sure 7D users will be well pleased to learn that a 7D is a "top" Canon camera. I don't see it quite like that. I can confirm that my Nikkors have rubber O ring seals on the lens mounts. That aside, I have never bought a camera due to weather sealing properties being high on my list of requirements.

My istD has done sterling work in the worst desert environments and never missed a beat along with my Sigma 70-200mm Mk1.

I wonder how many Pentax users would give up weather sealing for better, faster AF or a decent non WR long telephoto.

My K7 is better sealed than my D7000 but no better than my D700. It doesn’t matter. Other factors do.

As an afterthought, it's all ambiguous, if it was done properly, the cameras would have IP ratings and as far as I'm aware, they don't.

Best regards
7D - since it is used by so many Pros I think we can safely call it a top camera - whatever it costs. It doesn't have to be FF to be top class (whatever your definition is).

You may wonder how many would swap their WR for faster AF but do you also wonder how many chose their Pentax just because it has WR and that gives them peace of mind in inclement weather etc. ? It may be of little concern to you that your Pentax has WR but you only have to scan the threads here and on other Pentax sites to know that many people place this feature high on their list of desirable features.

Some more interesting threads on this subject :

This one is D700 vs 5D Mk II and has a link to a 25% failure rate for the Canons used on one trip : http://prakashphotography.blogspot.com/2009/02/nikon-d700-vs-canon-5d-mk-ii-weat...

This has a nice comparison on under US$2,000 WR cameras : http://www.neocamera.com/article.php?id=weathersealed_dslrs

I agree with Kris : #13 is the best IMO, then #8 and also #14 for the juxtaposition of just about everything between the sleeping man and athletic girl. Fine set.

There are many shots which are best served by B&W or another processing to create a particular mood or recreate an era. However I sometimes feel people (I'm not referring to posters in this thread !) choose B&W or a Monotone simply because they believe it is more 'arty' or that it imbues them with a certain air of 'knowing' or superiority *taps nose*.

Notice the wonderful incandescent light in this shot, the strong influence & contrast of the reds (which has been completely nullified in the other versions), the lovely colouring of the granite pathway and the subtle night-time 'blue hue' at the top of the photo. All lost in the other versions.

For me it's hands down the colour version.

Ha Ha !

Yes I like it much more now ... except for the missing spire & pathways of course, obviously the act of straightening it means we've lost those.

When using a 10-20 you always need to allow plenty of extra 'crop space' around the subject as you'll lose a lot in processing.
But don't you think the tower looks much more distorted now than when it was tilted? None of the angles are correct now, and the clock face is a funny shape. And the top of the tower looks much too big compared to the building below.
Actually the angles were all wrong before. There is no way that building could actually be standing - tower leaning one way and the main structure leaning the other. The very typical distortion created by the 10-20 at 10 degrees. Probably for most it was the distorted angles that made the shot so interesting !
