20 years ago, there was still a village there, but now it has become a young forest with the wetland reserve just 90 metres away.

What you see is only the eastern part of the island. The western part is being occupied by a training & adventure school.

Well, the new Pentax distributor has hinted of a new unannounced DSLR to us Singapore Pentaxians, but did not say what it would be...

It has got us guessing also.

Let's all wait and see . . .

I think Pentax is in a good position at the moment.

- Three high quality SLRs with image stabilisation built. (Personally I don't much see the point in the K-M and K200 coexisting as they are so similar.)

- Consumer zoom lens line-up from 10mm through to 300mm.

- Prime lenses from 14mm to 300mm all of which are of high quality and many of exceptionally small size and weight.

- High end zoom lens line from 16mm to 250mm (very soon).

- 1.4x Tele-converter round the corner which should be a great match with the DA*300mm.

- No ridiculously expensive specialised kit with low margins to damage them.

Plus, The K10/20/200 and * lenses are the best sealed kit after Oly's E3 and the two newest SWD lenses.

For the price you pay you get a hell of a lot with Pentax.

The only thing that I would like it a more sensitive AF module for low light shooting.

If you look at Nikon they have the D40/60/90/300/700/3/3x, 7 cameras and they still have huge gaps between them. The gap from 60-90 is the biggest of these in terms of capabilities.

Canon have the 1000/450/40/50/5/5II/1DIII/1DsIII, an amazing eight cameras!
Make that nine with the 500D.

However, not concerned as the k-m/K200d/K20D is a cracking combo. Just a shame that there is not a K2D full frame to knock spots off the 5D mk2, A900 and D700. but hey ho.
Anyway a defence to Jessops(there is one and only one), My K20D is faulty, and bought at jessops at the time (they were the cheapest), now not having the recipt, I needed a duplicate so I can send to Pentax for a warranty fix, and hey presto! they provided one, and it was not the shop I bought it from, as it has closed.
Having said that, I think that Jessops are short sighted in no longer selling any pentax kit, but more fool them, at least Jacobs/LCE/Calumet are still on the street, with SRS on the web.
In Singapore, WE Pentaxians use the 35mm film as our"Full Frame" bodies. Some of us carry both the DSLR and SLR out on our outings once a month.

On the 18th of this month, we are going to one of our off shore islands to take picture of the old villages, or whats left of them and the nature reserve. Will post it here once we have captured the picture to share to all in the UK forum.

I use the Lowepro Mini Trekker AW. Takes 2 bodies and a good number of lenses and accessories as well as the tripod and a laptop up to 15"

That, my friend, is a prototype made for Pentax's 50th Anniversary. It did not go into production though. What a pity. . .

I've no idea what the global market is like for Pentax, but here in the UK you've got to dig a bit and research before you buy to really appreciate what is available. The K20D has picked up lots of favourable reviews lately and the forum here seems to have new people all the time at the moment. So it might not be so bad for Pentax, but in the current climate lots of surprising things have happened.

Does anyone know how Pentax are faring on the global side of things, as we must be quite a small market here in the UK.

As people have said above to me it's Jessops who look a bit more shaky. It can only truly work as a shop with an emphasis on the quality of service and advice, but my impression is they've tried to save costs on the staffing side, and they will pay for that. It makes them no different to buying a camera from Dixons or Comet.
Here in Singapore, it is the same. We just lost another distributor who helmed Pentax for the last 3 years. THey priced the DSLRs so high trying to make bigger profits such that we SG Pentaxians decided to go Grey and overseas and online to get our stuff at better prices so much so that they decided to give up Pentax to another distributor who will officially take over in may 2009. Can you imagine a K20D body only costing SGD$1700 or GBP 763 pounds. (sorry, we use the $ sign here) The official price for a K20D plus kit lens is SGD$2299 or GBP 1031 pounds. Crazy. Most of us get our its thru shops that stock Grey market or go to places like Hong Kong to get our stuff. Some go online to Pentax USA.

Only 1000 units of the Titanium bodied K20Ds and 1000 units of the Olive green K-ms would be manufactured. Dunno if they are available "only" for japan or would be available everywhere.

Hi Felix, welcome to the forum
My wife is from Singapore and I visit often the lovely island.
K20 is a lovely camera, let's see some lovely shots of Sentosa island
Miss that to bits

Where about in Singapore are you? I know reasonably well the island

Amin
Hi Amin,

I live in the Delta/River Valley area. Close to Bukit Merah.

Sentosa is now too costly to visit as it is catering more to tourist than locals.
