In my forum search I found several articles relating to DIY ringflash, but none based upon the idea of using cheap fibre optics, hence why I submitted the link. Do you not think it is a good idea? I would have thought for macro photography it has good potential...

I don't know if this has been discussed before (couldn't find it by searching the forum), but there's an interesting article I came across about building a DIY ring flash. Article here link I notice he's using a K20D as well

Haven't built it myself, so don't know how effective it would be, but the principle seems sound. Could save someone a lot of money!

I've been looking at this thread as a new user, and have a couple of comments to make if you don't mind?

First, legally, if the goods were offered for sale at given price and you accepted and paid for them in full at the price offered then the transaction is complete and the shop cannot later change their mind and say they made a mistake. Note that this is different to, for example, a lens costing £1,000 incorrectly being advertised at £100 in a magazine advert or on a website, you providing your credit card details, and the shop/website then refusing to accept your order. They are within their rights here because the sale has not been completed.

Morally, of course, it is up to you to do what you are comfortable with.

On the issue of warranty, provided you have proof of purchase then you warranty will be honoured. Proof of purchase does not necessarily mean a till receipt - for example a page from your visa or bank statement with the transaction showing is sufficient evidence. Worth remembering for if you ever loose a receipt!

The CAB should have been able to tell you much of the above!

Finally, I don't work in the legal field, but have passing experience of contract terms & conditions, so this info is offered 'as is' in good faith. Hope it is of some help...

Thanks for the welcoming messages guys, and also for the info on the expected behaviour of the flash.

The locking pin definitely doesn't come out, but the grip on the hotshoe mount is very good, so I'm not concerned about the flash inadvertently coming loose. Having said that, I would expect everything to work 100% on a brand new unit so I think I'll return it to Amazon - they're always very responsive on returns, so I don't think there will be any problems getting a replacement. I'm also thinking that if I sell it at some time in the future I would not want to have 'faults' to declare if they can be avoided.

Just wanted to say 'hi' to everyone. I've just joined the forum, although I have been a 'lurker' for many months and have learned a lot from the high quality advice that members provide.

My interest in photography started in my teens and I used to do B&W processing in a makeshift darkroom in the bathroom. Getting an OM10 was one of the highlights of my life, shows how far we're going back! Unfortunately, studies, work, marriage, children, etc all got in the way and my interest in photography lay dormant for many years. I'm glad to say that the availability of very capable digital equipment has re-awakened my interest, and I've now got a K10D and Aperture on my Macbook to process the results.

I've just treated myself to a new flashgun, but I think there might be an issue with the locking mechanism which I'm hoping any AF540 owners could help me with. When I turn the locking wheel to the right there is no 'click' or anything to let me know that it is locked in position. Also, with the flash off the camera I can see what appears to be a recessed locking pin on the hotshoe mount, but again moving the locking ring clockwise does not make the locking pin come out. Is this normal?
