For my pocket camera it boiled down to a choice between the Q and the Ricoh GRDIV. I went for a Q as there was a good offer on. The new GR is slightly larger than the Q although more pocketable as the lens retracts. But the sensor is thirteen times larger. Thirteen!!!!!!!! It's going to be hard to resist that, even at the launch price. One of my posh lenses just might have to go to make way for it. Especially as I'm getting fed up with waiting for the Qmount wide angle prime. 13!

Thanks for the advice on colour popping. I have tried it on a few occasions, rather clumsily but people have generally liked the results. One of them has won a couple of competitions. But I'd like to improve upon it so these tips are useful. I couldn't give a monkeys whether it's considered naff or not it's still fun. I even bought a tobacco grad the other day for that 70's look so I have no shame

A sewage pipe never looked so good. Top class seascapes for those who like that kind of thing, and I do.

It's a different tax regime, that makes a big difference. Rises in the US will mean rises over here too.

Maybe the numbers just aren't there. Pentax DSLR market share is small and only a small percentage of those would buy this lens new. Small squared = not worth bothering.

If it were that cold then it might not be wise to operate a camera anyway due to the risk of frostbite.

I would recommend something with better performance than the MX-1. I consider image quality to be decent but nothing more. I would always encourage someone to shoot RAW (or at least RAW+Jpeg) on a trip like that and my experience was that the MX-1 write speeds were woeful. Not a problem for a landscape, but I wouldn't want to miss shots amongst the hustle and bustle of Kathmandu.

Ricoh have shown a clear understanding of where products need to be positioned by upgrading the GRD to APS-C so I'm sure that they will have identified at an early stage the need for a higher end zoom compact. Whether it will appear this year, who knows. I think there is a reasonable chance.

I would recommend a high end zoom compact. It wouldn't be a Pentax unless something suitable is announced for later this year.

If you can get it done for £25 then I would say yes. It is a fine lens and would someone last a lifetime. Seems a shame to consign such a wonderful little piece of engineering to the srapheap.

I could quite happily take just the K28mm f3.5 for landscape work in Iceland. It will be fine with filters, taking whatever system you decide on. As with other K series lenses it can be prone to cool colours and show a touch of violet sometimes.
