Comeback? They've only been around about ten minutes, or maybe that's an age thing.

Nice clear shots though. Hair looks best in the last one, imo.

I bought a 35mm slide scanner from Maplin, and it's been great. At the time it was £29.99 on their web site, but special offer of £19.99 at a store open day. It's marked as "5Mp file and slide scanner, equivalent to 1800dpi or 3600dpi with interpolation."

I had trouble with it not working on one XP machine, but it's fine on the other. The box says "Windows XP SP2 above / Vista / Win7" but I haven't tried it on 7.

I think it's very similar to some of the ones you get in Currys/PCW, but at a much lower price. If you're trying to scan larger than 35mm, though, it's no use. If quality of the original isn't marvellous, you can get some good results by hanging the negatives or slides on a lightbox and photographing them.

Haven't been to this quite local show before, not a bad afternoon out. Hard to get photos without people standing in the way though.

Heck, I wish I'd realised. I was trying to get some shots of a steam loco without overhead lines, but keep forgetting to look at that site.

Well, my Energizer lithiums (£7 in Tesco for four) seem to be much better than the alkaline ones, managed an entire day (though not so many photos) without bleating on about the battery being depleted. So it looks as if my problem has gone away.

I've had the same problem, as I hadn't read the manual. I got about a year out of the set of Energiser that came with the camera, and carried some new Duracell batteries ready for when they finally ran out. Got about a week out of them, so I suspected they were duff and put some more in. Over the weekend it claims to have used two sets, in about 500 photos. I discovered the menu setting for battery type, as I was at the far end of Oulton Park circuit and it kept shutting down with "Battery Depleted", then coming back on if I let it rest. It wasn't until I got back home that I discovered the comment in the manual about alkaline batteries being basically 'only if you have to'.

So I am relieved to hear that it's probably nothing, I just need to be not so cheap on the batteries I select.

Cheers for that. I had a look at the doorway shot, but the left hand vertical is, well, vertical, so I left it alone. I know there's a mark somewhere in the camera, haven't had chance to check it.

I will have to get into post-processing, something I've never played with.

And I love the catch in focus function, it enabled me to get a lot more shots than I originally thought I would get. Simply set to AF.S, hold the shutter button down then slowly focus the lens and try to keep up. Worked a treat
I found that too, with my 500mm Tamron - allowed me to get some pretty good action shots with approaching vehicles.

I did wonder about where 3 and 4 are as sharp as they could be, but then you've also got the extra step of the scanner that might not be helping - do they look any sharper on a projector? I guess with the atmosphere over the bay that might also affect the photo - that is, not an issue with sharpness but perhaps with the general haze?

Only other thing I'd say (and I'm not really in a position to critique others on this) is the cropping on picture 2 is a little severe - a little more on the right would have got whatever that thing on the side of the boat is, and evening it up into the centre might have got the right hand side of the boat in the background. But of course I don't know what else might be preventing that shot, perhaps if you're on a jetty you couldn't get any further back?

But SP is right about number 4, postcard material.

I visited Bodelwyddan for the first time in July, to attend the classic car show there. Was rewarded with a very nice day and a little breeze to stop it getting too warm. Only just got around to posting these photos. Looks as if I have to check the lens or something as there are some regular marks I didn't notice before. Other than a bit of cropping on a couple of them, there's no pp done.

Anyway, any thoughts welcome on these.
