You really need advice from a top expert video salesman to get exactly the camera that suits you best Don. Luckily we have such shops and professionals in the UK.... so we are spoiled by the excellent service/advice we receive.

you seem to be completely oblivious or perhaps disingenuous to what I've been saying... I already have the pro video cameras and just bought the mirrorless cameras which is how SONY got the last ten grand I spent on equipment instead of pentax... I'm not buying TWO sets of pro lenses for TWO systems....the lack of one decent video spec'd dslr is why Pentax is losing a long time loyal customer.
I buy ONE GMaster 70-200 2.8 and I can use it on a pro cinema cam, a prosumer video cam, a mirrorless that gives me everything from pro stills to pro video... same lens... if pentax had simply added 4k video to any camera body, those sales would have been to pentax for pro glass and a new body...

those who fail to realize Pentax needs my money more than Sony can keep trying to be arrogant Pr!@ks about it, but losing market share to a company like sony isn't going to help Pentax stay in business, and if they go out of business you'll eventually find yourself having to switch brands too...
personally, I'd be worried about that if I was about to drop thousands on a new camera or lens from a manufacturer that's losing life time loyal customers to a juggernaught like sony... The a7III's are backordered even sony is struggling to keep up with demand... and they're about to release new models..some at lower price points...

don't tempt me to go off on a rant here, getting banned from a Pentax forum isn't going to bother me, since I'm not buying anything pentax in the future... I can live without pentax.

it wouldn't have been too much trouble to mix a few Pentax D-slr video shots into a workflow if the camera had the feature... but switching seems to be the only option... which is too bad. I would have bought more pentax rather than switching.

I am of the opinion that mirrorless cameras take over the process. I can't see why anyone would prefer them!
weird but I shoot mostly in manual for video and stills but... BUT... when the times happen, and they do happen, that things unfold to rapidly for a human to keep up, I expect the camera to to perform on auto faster than I can on manual... and still produce pro results.

My sony nx80 has one of the fastest and most accurate AF I've ever seen... I would even go so far as to suggest it would tie or beat any pentax for af speed and accuracy in good light and destroy my k3 in low light. I often go into the menu system and set the the AF to the slowest setting possible, and set it to spot af on the touch screen so I and do a focus pull between two points and have a smooth rack focus... which a two man crew could do just as easily and just as accurately on manual... but.. they'd need an expensive cinema lens, pull stops and a couple tries to nail the same shot I can do in seconds with AF....

it's not always about how fast the af works but how fast (and expensive) the WORKFLOW is.

I don't think video is the be-all-and-end-all, video bloggers are becoming much more technical in their video production. One I saw recently had five cameras on the go, these weren't high-end mirrorless but the minimal that could deliver 1080p HD content. Drones will increasingly become the defacto production tools - replacing selphie sticks and multiple tripod mounted cameras. I can't see Pentax being able to compete in these markets (neither will high-end, FF mirrorless cameras - the costs would be too high).

Everybody seems to want superb video, but how are they using it? Video blogging is one application, but what are the others, home movies? I'm genuinely interested in those from this forum who have moved away for better video - what are you doing with it?

The 645Z was the first medium format camera ever to do video - but the nay sayers reported it as the usual mediocre Pentax video offering - some people are never satisfied.

Pentax can't influence third party manufacturers and nor should they. How could they justify spending the R&D on new lenses if half their market is swallowed up by independents at cheaper prices?
1) I have clients that want stills and video... video pays more in terms of wages per hour for completed work.
2) Corporate gigs and events ALWAYS want video and if they have to choose between the two, video always seems to win... (everybody's got cell phones to snap stills with but no one seems to get decent video with cell phones).
3) I will often make and use videos for self promotion (even if its a video of a photoshoot) or movie trailers or pitches when applying for financing and grants...

that is how I use video... sure I might not use a RED came or Sony Venice to shoot the trailer or pitch, but the video must look good so I can get the budget approved to rent the cinema cams to make the real project and the trailer has to be at least compelling enough that they hand the $80,000.00 cameras to do the job.

Any photographer is free to use whatever marque they want to, it's their money. No doubt a fair few come back again having found that the grass isn't greener elsewhere.

There are some things that Pentax cameras do brilliantly well and some things that other makes do brilliantly well. It can be quite interesting sometimes to see photographers struggling to take shots that are a breeze with our Pentaxes, and this will work the other way round as well.

It's an endless argument without any possible resolution. Just like a Battle of the Formats, for example.
true there are things Pentax is brilliant at....

Everyone has to make their own choices based on what they want from a system.

As I mentioned to someone else on this forum very recently, lots of fun can still be had using old K and M42 mount lenses (or virtually any mount really) on a mirrorless camera.
yep... I'm taking all my old pentax MF primes and "declicking" the apertures for use with a sony a7 and Zhiyun crane 2 gimbal for filmmaking. the gimbal has a focus puller built in...

leaked by some guy named Assaho man or something like that.
"Asahi man" on DPR is the fellow you are talking about. He does not give many details away but his comments/leaks about upcoming announcements have been very accurate. The K1 II for example.

But beware , the folks on that site make up their own interpretations of what he says. I do not recall him saying anything other than to expect a continued full-frame output from pentax and to expect surprises for 2019, the 100 year aniversary of the founding of the original Asahi company which evolved later into Asahi-Pentax.
yep I would expect gold trimmed k1 II kit with grip and 31 ltd in a loverly gift box to be the big anniversary package.

There is a rumour that Pentax might use a Samsung sensor in a future camera.

Pentax celebrate 100 years next year and I expect a Big Bang! from the explosion of the new releases

shame really he didn't leak any specs....
but I need to upgrade sooner rather than later and it would be my luck that the announcement would come in jan or feb, models not released till April or June, then when it finally hits the stores... the video specs and af would be eight years behind the competition anyways...
Pentax is a photographers company. oh well. sour grapes... lol

Don't forget you can have lots of fun (and get lots of great photos) adapting old K-mount lenses to your A7 III
Thank you all, that's so nice of you to say.

I'm taking all the "click" mechanisms out of all my old Pentax MF glass and adding focus puller rings and a pk to sony adapter to the kit....

the remaining aps-c gear, I plan to use till it dies.

as for new lenses... a mid their kit lens, and a couple gmasters to start.. eventually a bunch of cinema lenses when I get me a lease on a sony Venice or buy the fs7 or fs5...

but damn.. it would have been nice if Pentax had just re-badged the Samsung nx1 with a fully compatible Kmount lens mount or adapter...

It was a great run.
From the first camera I used a k1000 in high school as a yearbook photographer.
A survivor of Canada's abhorrent 60's scoop I found myself on the streets and bought a second hand k1000 and got myself off the streets and in business with sales form that second hand $20.00 Pentax.
Always struggling and and working hard...
I struggled against racism, poverty and issues relating to Autism.
Years of abuses and being exploited and abused in domestic violence situations meant I was never far from the plight of homelessness despite many remarkable achievements in pro photography with very modest prosumer level equipment.
I was always loyal to one brand.

Then digital came along and I was always fast to adopt new ideas and technology and often found myself waiting and wanting Pentax to catch up.
Despite often being a remarkably good deal in the industry Pentax failed to really lead more oft than not, but what they did do was pack a lot of features into tough cameras for very decent prices and great lenses too. Best value in the business for stills.

but I also shoot video....
and this is where the underdog success story love affair falls apart...
D-slrs that shoot video are vital to film makers alongside action cameras, video cameras and cinema cameras.

In all those categories Pentax has a system that could have been contenders.. if only.. an action camera, a mirrorless camera and a d-slr that all shoot decent 4k video could have made a one brand shop for most needs. and if only.. 4, 6 or 8 k video out of a pentax 645? and awesome cinema camera that could have been.

but was never meant to be.

It was a good marriage, but people change, I need different things from a life partner than what you have to offer.

So this week I'm ordering a Sony A7III and three Gmaster lenses.
I can't afford two systems so I'll be leaving you.
Still love you, but I'm going places you can't keep up.
I'm no longer a photographer that shoots video.
I'm a film maker that loves photography.
You're not the right partner for me. for want of ONE feature....
Thanks for the great memories though.
