I think Joshua answered the original question. The rest of the thread is a "side note" I see little benifit to repeating the right answer, but it never hurts explore the ideas and info in the entire thread. Ever ask a question and find the answer leads you to ten more questions? That's what makes an interactive forum like this, so valuable.

Thank you Matt for the link, I have a Palm pilot, and now have a Dof chart to go with it.

I don't know about you guys, but I found this Entire thread to be worth my time.

as a little side note on using the lcd screen for exposure and or DOF checking:
it's not that accurate, images look shaper than they are because of the size and I find images that look ok on my lcd are often underexposed on my computer. The histogram doesn't lie; and I've learned to use that; as it's easier than remembering to pump up/dial down the brightness setting on my lcd when the ambient lighting changes. OLED screens from samsung on future cameras may solve that problem though.
DOF; best method is use a chart (Mattmatic help please) to figure the DOF for your focal length and use Hyperfocal distance. second best method use your viewfinder and DOF button (better than when I used to half unmount my kmount lenses on my k1000 to get the aperture to stop down. ).When in doubt stop down and/or set higher iso.
original post has been answered in that it is safe to use the method in question.
ps the original post said "after thinking a long while..." blah blah blah
I see you've been buying Pentax for a long while; so I guess it goes without saying, that you've been "thinking a long while" also...

here's an interesting thought:
you slap an aps sized d lens onto a pentax fullframe dslr, and the sucker actually works, but the camera only uses the area of the sensor covered by the lens....therefore the 18 mp sensor (originally intended for the 645d) only uses 10 mp's worth of image area....then you slap on your older or nwer full frame lens to get the whole 18 mp sensor covered!

would make sense to use the r&d already paid out on the 645d and drop it into a kmount body.....
why come into the medium format market, late, and toting a pea shooter, when you can arrive at the slr market with cruise missile?

to my knowledge canon was the only manufacturer of full frame sensors.
perhaps other camera makers did not want "Canon Inside" logos on thier SLR's.....

It may be that some sensors originally designed for medium format digitals are being repurposed and have price points suitable for dslrs.....

with the way the sensor moves in the pentax, for the shake reduction, i wonder if its possible to develope a camera that can capture multi images, with a one pixel shift, and merge them....like a sixty mp still off a 10 mp sensor....

there's also the real possibility that you could develope a sensor, that can resolve more detial than ANY current glass lens can deliver....
then what? all glass lenses become obsolete, and some liquid filled plastic bubble with cubic zirconia lens becomes the new standard?

I wonder if technology like KM/sony's antishake could be made to work (on one plane/axis) with in camera processor stiching together data from the sensor to capture wider angled images. Ie pivot the sensor to collect more light...or pack more pixels on one chip, but have the additional light receptors angled to the left ang right to collect wider AOV....maybe learn to bend the chip into an arch....
I think APS sized sensors are here to stay...35mm's 24x36 image area never fit the standard 8x10 frames anyways and it hung in there 'till something entirely different came along.

I like that about this place cause for me, it'd be a long walk across the pond...come to think about it I can't walk on water...Most Canadians do believe that Christ did walk on water, with only the skeptics among us believing it was winter at the time...javascript:emoticon('')

my experience with external hard drives is this:
It is almost always cheaper to buy a usb2/firewire case and seperate hd and assemble it yerself than to buy an external drive.

here's a different tip for skin softening I sometimes use..(not standard use but has it's place in your repetior).
create new layer.
apply heavy gausion blur try 15-35 pixels.
desaturate layer.(55-65%)
set blending mode to pin light or hard light.
set opacity to 40-80% (more art than science)
erase from areas you don't want it.

gives sort of a (controlable) diffusion filter on a darkroom enlarger effect where the shadow flare out and highlights get subtler smoothing.

I'm sure there's other ways to get better effects. but it never hurts to play around with your software.
