Web design software

I was wondering what other users of the forum had employed for any websites they may have created? I've been using a combination of Dreamweaver 4, J album (for the galleries) and WordPress for the blog.

Dreamweaver is a bit of a monster for my needs and I'd like to downgrade to something slimmer (like J album and WordPress)

I think most people know I code by hand anyway. I don't use note pad though, I use Coffee Cup. It's basically a text format, but when you are just starting out, you can use a bit of wysiwyg to help you on your way.

Dreamweaver and Frontpage tend to throw in lots of superfluous code, that does nothing to enhance the site, but can confuse some browsers.

Check out w3c's site for loads of info on how to write your own code. w3c is the definitive source for getting your code written correctly to the latest code conventions.

I started mine with taco html and a html tear sheet from a magazine.
I then added stuff to it using Mac homepage and a program called galerie.
I've now added stuff from Iweb.
Mac's Rule!!!...don't let that go to your head Mac from Montreal....your're pretty cool too...

My first website was done using 'WebEditor', which was okay, but as Liam said, the wysiwyg programs just chuck in loads of superfluous stuff that doubles the page sizes, so when I redesigned it I did it all in Notepad.

HTML's easy once you get going! I do sometimes use an HTML editor, just because they use different colours for things which can help pick bits out.

For laying the code out as you want it, and making it as easy as possible to find your way around and edit it, don't use wysiwyg!

I do all my html (and C/C++) programming in UltraEdit.

I Second this one, UltraEdit is a great editor.
I divide my HTML programming between dreamweaver (for tables comes handy) and UltraEdit. UltraEdit also for any programming languages with no IDE (PERL, VBScript, Stored Procedures, etc)

Actually I should have said UltraEdit and UltraStudio - which is great for large scale C/C++ development

I started by using TACO edit for the site and Galerie for the photo galleries, then when iWeb came out I was suckered into believing this was the best thing! Not so.

With V1.0 iWeb was fine, update to V1.1, forget it, doesn't publish. I have now copied back my original site and will go back to TACO, Galerie.

iWeb is VERY slow, even when it does publish. I don't like the templates either.

I am not very amused by the Jobs Hype over ease of use of his latest toy iWeb and the lots of other people who cannot publish .....

Am I mad to go back to creating in an editor and Gallerie to then upload to Homepage rather than iWeb?

iWeb seems to be for people creating blogs and such ......

Iweb is tempermental.
Always publish it to a folder then save then publish to web.
Naming pages with spaces and other charactors, hyphens commas etc causes problems. when in doubt throw out the "domain"file and resave your project then try the publish routine above.
I'm using I web AND homepage AND custom pages written with TACO in various parts of my site.

Yes I know about spaces from other programs that cannot handle but if one publishes to a folder first, don't you lose some of the iWeb specific advantages/features when you then publish to .mac?

I think my homepage looks better, is faster and is much easier to control. edit and keep backed up.

Using Taco as the editor all the pages are locally on my Powermac. Using Gallerie to create all the photo pages, stored in the same place. Using Transmit to shoot the whole lot up to .mac.

Yesterday I reinstalled the whole homepage I had before in less time than it took two further tries at publishing in iWeb.

I have been publishing for 3 months or so with iWeb with -_ in page names without problem.

I just registered this software for 12 usd.

Drag and drop your pef onto filejuicer and lo and behold it EXTRACTS from within the pef file 3 jpgs of different levels.

This could save a lot of time when getting together jpg files for a website.

the purpose of publishing to a folder, is to save time by finding errors befor you try your .mac account. so the idea is publish to a folder, check it out then publish it to .mac.

That's strange then because it publishes to a folder fine even with the latest version, but refuses to then publish to .mac which today is completely down. The mail is back up this morning though but I cannot access .mac

iWeb update 1.1.1 said to fix publishing errors. Will try it and let you know.

Half way through publishing. So it seems indeed that the new update fixes what became broken on the previous update.
