Many magazines are two months behind by the time they come to print and become available. Have any 'photographic' magazines mentioned the merger of Pentax with Hoya (filters) yet? I doubt it.

I feel that more information is readily available on the internet from forums like this one and other sites. The amount of information which is sort after in a magazine may only occupy half a page of the whole magazine, or less, unless the magazine is specialised.
that's not why I buy magazines.
The latest "news" off the net isn't always reliable. Often requires wading neck deep in trash to find the good stuff....
and gets harder to find as time passes.

A magazine collection is a reference library. A place to keep your favorite tips, for when your memory fails... Writers you trust.

You'd be amazed about how many photography photography tips you find in todays media are identical to what was printed in magazines from the 1970's.

I find a writer or two I like and trust, and there is a baseline to verify the latest rumours floating about the net.

Oh, and guess what I always turn to, for reading material, when there's no power/wifii signal to be had?

speaking of "Big Brother" and cameras....
Anybody see this article?

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/england/tyne/7378695.stm

disturbing to me....bad enough they got those cameras popping up everywhere.....but I thought they were only tripped by a speedgun....It would appear by the comment "the diver won't be charged.....there was no speed infraction" leads me to understand that those cameras are recording and storing EVERY VEHICLE! every minute, all day long?

I plan on adding it to my commercial portfolio., maybe a promo tearsheet.
If I can take a few $1.00 items from a bargian store, and make them look good...

The toothbrush will have a dollop of toothpaste on it (think aquafresh), so it will look better where it is.

the pebbles, I'm iffy on...thanks for the feedback...

the only photoshop work I plan for this peice is to remove the brand names off the soap and toothbrush.
everything else is as shot.

I may scrim the light on the grey line (it's the backsplash). to tone it down a notch...

here's one for your consideration:
Apple tv. http://www.apple.com/appletv/

now I don't know what options are available to windoze users, but there ARE options.
Now for Mac users.....
Give one of these suckers to Grandma, set it up for her, to grab your photos from your iPhoto library (over the net), or off your .mac account, or flicker, and there's a second harddrive, remote location, back-up of your best photos. you can even set it up so Grandma can see your family/vacation photos, updated as you update your albums.

This is actually how I've been delivering Hi-def wedding videos and photos to my Wedding clients!

I've talked to one or two pros of the creative type and they love AF, AE etc. They say it lets them concentrate on the subject not the technology.
true today...wasn't always so. the technologies matured in the "wild" on amateur models before gaining acceptance with pros.

mongoose...the flipside of that argument is this:
for years pro's balked at af, built in flashes and ttl flash metering.
left to thier own devices, pros would impede development of better cameras, it's the amateurs that drive development.

we're in a catch 22. We need to produce images amauers don't, so we need better equipment, and sometimes we demand more from manufacturers. some areas we have to pioneer to stay ahead of the game, however, we tend to buy the technology, AFTER it's matured, more often than not.

so an outrageous ff, 40 mp sensor hits the market, the well heeled pros get the first batch at prices that recoup r&d costs for the manfacturer. The amatures demand it, it goes to mass production...the amatuers find out it's noisy, more r&d goes into fixing that because amatuers won't buy expensive pro lighting gear, they find a way to fix it, and it winds up in a prosumer, or pro model we can live with.

end result? they say the k20 has less noise than the k10. the k10 has more noise than the ds2.
k20=ds2? (for noise) + higher resolution + more pro features, weatherproofing etc....
bottom line for me?
next year the k20 will sell for equal or less money than I paid for my ds2 when it was new.
so why complain?

And the final argument for larger pixel counts is this:
Many people thinking that if they buy a "Better" camera they can get images as good as the pro's. this results in development of better cameras being sold in larger numbers, and lower prices. When the marketing guys do thier thing, we all win.

Was only a few years ago that a camera producing images like the k20 would've cost more than a starter house.

What would hockey be like if guys like Wayne Gretzky couldn't afford to buy skates?
Can just anybody with a good pair of skates play like Wayne Gretzky?

it's all good!
