favourite magazine subscription?

There's a clue in the question! What are the favoured magazine subscriptions? I've taken a bit of a shine to Digital Photo, mainly because of the PS tutorials, I upgraded from a far cheaper ( but I still sometimes find, easier to use MS Imaging suite) to Photoshop and find the tutorials useful... although they do tend to have instructions like "Now press Ctrl-T..." with no explanation of what it's going to do for you!

I used to subscribe to Photography Monthly & it was pretty good, the problem is once you've covered a yearly period a lot of the tutorials/tips etc just seem to be repeated... don't subscribe anymore but pick up a mag now & again depending on the content

Funny you asking this on the forum for a subscription based magazine.

So the obvious answer is Pentax User, but I also subscribe to Amateur Photographer and Shutterbug.

AP is a nice weekly update for adverts as well as tests and articles, not for news which is old before it gets to print these days, and arrives usefully early for subscribers. Every Saturday.

Shutterbug gives a US perspective and is to be had for a remarkably low subscription price.

Pentax User and Photoshop Elements User are the only two I subscribe to. I usually get them several weeks after they were published but they do get here eventually.
If I see a magazine in the shop that looks interesting/informative then I may buy it, but English language magazines are very expensive here, and Dutch language ones on the whole are pretty useless.

What is Photoshop Elements (other than a piece of software) ?

It is a piece of software.
But there is also a very good website and magazine which has lots of useful tutorials and tips for those of us who use it. www.photoshopelementsuser.com

No doubt there is something similar for full PS. I see a PS mag in the shops here in English.

Seriously I do not subscribe to any photographic magazine.
I used to subscribe to some computer based magazines but I do know quite a bit about computers so gave up on those a while ago.
I do fix, upgrade and build computers for friends, family and a few others.

Many magazines are two months behind by the time they come to print and become available. Have any 'photographic' magazines mentioned the merger of Pentax with Hoya (filters) yet? I doubt it.

I feel that more information is readily available on the internet from forums like this one and other sites. The amount of information which is sort after in a magazine may only occupy half a page of the whole magazine, or less, unless the magazine is specialised.

that's not why I buy magazines.
The latest "news" off the net isn't always reliable. Often requires wading neck deep in trash to find the good stuff....
and gets harder to find as time passes.

A magazine collection is a reference library. A place to keep your favorite tips, for when your memory fails... Writers you trust.

You'd be amazed about how many photography photography tips you find in todays media are identical to what was printed in magazines from the 1970's.

I find a writer or two I like and trust, and there is a baseline to verify the latest rumours floating about the net.

Oh, and guess what I always turn to, for reading material, when there's no power/wifii signal to be had?

I used to subscribe to Outdoor Photography - their contributors include some of the best in the business. However after 100 issues or so there are only so many variations on the coastal sunset/flower macro/wildlife shot and now that I know how to use an ND Grad, a tripod and a polariser and have learnt the rule of thirds and that I ned a small aperture for good depth of field, and that the best landscapes are usually taken at the beginning or the end of the day in spring and autumn... the rest is patience...

So I now just pick up whichever one looks most interesting when I am in a newsagents...

And why are tripods in these magazines always 'trusty'??

I don't subscribe to any magazine, but I do pick up Amateur Photography and The British Journal of Photography every week.....mainly to give me something to read during lunch breaks at work.

One magazine I also get that I have never seen mentioned in any of the forums is Photo Icon magazine:- www.photoicon.com . Its a quarterly magazine but unlike most it concentrates on the photographers themselves (both living and desceased) rather than news and tutorials. I get my copy from WHSmiths here in Newark but I'm not sure how easy it is to get hold of elsewhere. It is a really good quality magazine and well worth a look.
