have you had any chances to get more images? here's an example showing what I was talking about...

start out with a longish shutter speed 1/8 sec or more till you get some motionblur in the flames, dial down your aperture to keep the highlights, then add some fill flash to get some sharpness in the flames and some detial in the shadows.
no two fires are alike, so experiment!

Hey Don, sounds to me like you must have some Scottish ancestry, that was said like a true Scot.
interestingly there is more than one gene in my ancestors that is predisposed to partaking of the good stuffss...
I'm sure theres a drunk Scottish gene fisticuffing with a drunk Irish gene, over who gets dibbs on first punch on the English gene...
then there's the French Gene that hates them all.
and lots of others too...
there's that gene of aboriginal descent that's pretty sure the other genes are on his strand.
the black gene, that while I didn't get any rhythm, if you're gonna be part black, I got the right part..
I'm genetically predisposed to self-destruct!

Peter, there are two trains of thought on the wiskey to warm you up idea...
A) scientific school that says alcohol dehydrates you and may induce hypothermia....
B) hands on experience that says wiskey don't freeze, so if you get enough in your bloodstream, it should work as antifreeze. Plus a happy positive attitude is key to survuval in the worst of circumstances!
therefore I guess the people that subscribe to the first school of thought aren't your typical canadian drinkers...
around these parts, if you got wiskey, you're probably happy, and if your happy, it won't matter if your house is burning, just roast a marshmallow, and drink some wiskey... and enjoy the heat while you can. it can't burn forever.

Around here, when it gets so cold you can hear a clinking sound (like icecubes in a glass) coming from your pants, it means your You know Whats, are frozen again, and we call that cold!

Don't trust your lcd screen (esp in the dark, as if it looks good on screen, you're probably 2 stops underexposed) turn noise reduction off in camera (look at noise ninja or photoshop in post to fix).
multiple exposures are worth trying.
check the lunar calander? you may have bright nights also!

expect it to change hourly, and ten or more hours of beautiful light!
weather protect yur lenses (the * series lenses would be ideal) dress for cool windy days in layers.
bring lots of batteries for your camera, lots of memory cards, a tripod, and some graduated nd's and a polariser filter.
the 28mm will give you more resolution for enlargements, so be sure to use it lots.
read up on spot metering (a landscape photographers best friend) and take readings from the sky with the sun just outside the viewer, to get a good starting point for bracketing your exposures on those long drawn out sunsets!
be creative with your white balance settings!
chemical hand warmers in your gloves, (I like wool mitten/glove hybids, for the ability to pull the mitten end open and have bare finger tips to work with, plus wool stays warm when wet), pockets (where you'll keep spare batteries warm) and even if nescesary, taped to your camera) are useful.
