Have a look at the Microsoft Image Resizer LINK
I use it all of the time, sometimes I run it for 1024 px then run the reduced files through Faststone to add borders,© and sharpen.

These were taken a few weeks ago by one of the members of Durham Photographic Society. All of the images were taken in about one hour but took three days to sort out the HDR the VR. I think ten exposures were taken for each frame due to the bright sunshine outside.

The minimum Camera Raw plug-in version required is 5.4 for the K7, but the maximum for CS3 is 4.6.
As Barrie said shoot in DNG.
