Hi Simon
I can`t answer your question but I can agree with your findings for continuous AF on a K3. It really doesn`t work terribly well.

Found this odd though:-
"...keeper rate rate is much higher with this lens then with the da*300 (+tc) and it feels like you have a higher buffer/burst rate. High iso looks cleaner as well comparing it with the da*300+tc"
Why? Surely these are camera/sensor issues not lenses?

Unfortunately Dave I don't have the 300mm, otherwise I'd be happy to try it out.
That's a shame. I think the majority of birding and wildlife Pentax users will look at this and ask themselves two questions. Compared to the DA*300+ 1.4x TC how fast does it focus at 420mm and how does the image quality compare.

I'm not sure there's a realistic gap for wildlife Rob, the 150-450mm fits the bill, plus of course the 560mm, which is quite compact for its length.
Could we really afford a 600mm f/4 or 400mm f/2.8? The existing lenses are pushing it, but just about affordable. It depends on our circumstances i know, but I'd find a £10,000 lens to be totally out of reach, even a £5000 one.
I have to agree with John . The lenses you speak of, even at f4 are exceptionally expensive and very, very heavy. As a wildlife photographer myself I feel the trend, even with the Canon boys, is for something more practical and versatile. With the advent of better high iso images the need for a very fast lenses is not as great as 5 years ago, especially with full frame becoming available. Add to that the additional cropping potential in recent years and the extra sharpness without the anti-alias filter I can't see many Pentax users wanting to spend the price of a new small car on a lens. It is a shame that the new Sigma's and the cheaper Tamron 150-600mm in particular weren't made in a Pentax mount. However if the Pentax 150-450 lens turns out to be as good as John thinks it is then the only gap for birders may lie with focusing speed and tracking capabilities (and that may be closing) rather than focal length.

Thanks John,
I just couldn't bring myself to get rid of the original Q though...it's such a classic.......especially in WHITE
Me neither - I've got a white one for a walk around and a black one for use with my DA*300 set up.
