Given that it is uniformly radiating light and stuff, it is interesting how it appears 3d and globular with a bright top and shaded underside, as if illuminated by a separate light source

Probably was sport. They clearly enjoy flying simply for flying's sake and in this particular case they are taking advantage of the "ground effect" in which the air gets compressed slightly under the wings when the bird gets close to a surface. This pushes the bird up and clear of surging waves - it must be great fun!
