I am absolutely delighted with this somewhat unusual 78mm Trioplan now that I have converted the mount to M42. 75mm is about as short as you can go with these and still get them to focus on a DSLR. With this one I managed to get a helicoid between the camera and the shutter assembly and it still went to infinity. At the other ('macro') end the shortest focusing distance is 20inches with the front cell wound IN and with it wound OUT it is just 8inches. I will take it out tomorrow - It's been throwing it down all day so I am stuck inside.

I agree with the desire (I don't bend any more either) but even with some sort of remote viewing/ tethering device you still have to get down there and adjust the thing so it is pointing in the right direction. I look forward to a report on how it performs.

The first one is a beautiful, well balanced picture. One wonders if the last was from the same day?

I like the colour one. It gives a better impression of depth and distance. The composition is near perfect.

Get the tripod out and there will be no stopping you. The 2nd one is particularly well detailed.

Fantastic macros. If it is alive it should twitch its tail as you handle it.

That is a lovely lens and, as you clearly know, you have to nail it perfectly! Nice to discover someone else has one.

Manfrotto geared tripod head. Once you have used one of these those twisty handled pan head things meet instant redundancy. They also don't droop with a heavy lens to hold straight like some ball heads do. Second to that would be an M42 > K mount adapter for my vintage lenses.

I am late to the party, as usual. Mega congratulations Gareth. You went through some rough times on the journey but the sun is shining on you now.

You just beat me to it Rob. I turned my *istD over to look, scrolled down and there was your post! I have two *istDs and both required new batteries when I acquired them. The other channel has just started a celebratory thread for *istD photos so if you use one, go and add to it, particularly since they have no idea how many units are still being used.

Wow and aren't they just gorgeous? I'd have them rotating each month as screen savers.

It might be old but it makes very pleasing pictures. I must give mine an outing - can't think when was the last time!

You didn't say it had an 'A' setting! That WILL transmit aperture data back to the camera and vice versa and you can use AV, TV and TAV, controlling these from the camera E dials. But no AF. You can also use the F series 1.7x AF adapter, if you have one. This will increase the focal length (by 1.7x) and also costs a couple of aperture stops of light but you do get excellent AF. That 'A' setting opens lots of possibilities.

Doesn't look like you needed any other lens. That B&W one is fantastic.

It should indeed bleep - but remember that the bleep is a guide, not a guarantee! When the camera is set to manual you will have to use the green button to set the correct exposure before pressing the shutter release.

I don't think most of those things are properties of the lens (whatever it might be) so there is nothing for it to communicate. They are all generated by the body. What the body will not record is the f value set on the lens (unless it has an 'A' setting.

Jonathan is absolutely correct. I have been using old glass for a long time (some of it very old) and I have totally enjoyed the experience. But also, don't neglect the 'old' Pentax glass, particularly the 'A' series and the Takumars. Many people follow the K series and the M series but these have to be used in Manual mode with the green button. Most of them are excellent and a fraction of the price you would pay for these reconstructed lenses. All of them are Full Frame.

Those B&Ws are marvelous - and you've been hiding pictures like these from us for years and years! Join the regular posters and give us more please. As to the K3ii - great camera but always take a charged spare battery out with you as they tend to gobble them up. It wouldn't be the first time mine has caught me out.
