Hi Ted, sorry if I came across a bit sharp with the previous post, I understand that you may not be able to get a newer camera, but I was just being open about what may be causing the noise. I have a K-m and a K-x, only about a year apart in age, but you would be amazed how much less noise is on the K-x images. I can't use the K-m at more than about 400 ISO without getting loads of noise, but the K-x is almost noise free at 1250 ISO. If you could save up a bit I'm sure you would be well rewarded.

David

Whereabouts are you located Tracy? I would echo the comments made by John X and would encourage you to get out and about with other photographers. You will learn more in 2 hours than you would in 2 months on your own.

I think this may be more to do with the camera you are using which was one of the first DSLR's and is not as good on the noise front as the more recent Pentax models. This shot would be almost noise-free with a K-x, K-r or K-5. I'm not sure what advice I can give you on getting rid of the noise, but it's always best if you can avoid it in the first instance.

DR. O, they are fantastic shots for the 55-300 - I can't squeeze anything like this quality from mine even when monopod mounted. I agree that the AF on this lens is not good for wildlife shots and I find it easier to focus manually with my old Tamron which has a very long focus throw and is buttery smooth.

I just bought a DA 16-45 F4 ED AL from a fellow forum member and it seems to gel perfectly with my K-x! For now, this is my favourite and is likely to get heavy use for landscapes!

55-300 is a very good lens and as Mike says the plastic version is identical optically to the metal mount version. I have this lens and use it a lot, BUT NOT for my bird pictures. I have a very old and mint Tamron Adaptamatic 300mm prime which is far better for the bird pics as it is slightly sharper, a joy to use and focus and renders details and colour more naturally. It cost me £20 from ebay. Clearly it's not a 500mm lens, but for £20 who cares? I agree with the comments above - stick with your Sigmas or wait and see how much the Pentax will cost. BTW I don't think it will be anywhere near £2500 as it will not be a DA* lens, but just a DA. Pentax have to compete with the likes of Sigma so it will have to be realistically priced.

Thanks for the info about Epson firmware updates. Looks like I won't be updating then as I don't intend to pay Epson prices for my ink.

All lovely shots Cliff. I often like to see the ones at a shorter focal length so there is more composition in the shot.
