If I'd angled the camera to make the water straight on this one, the building would have ended up like .... Well, Leaning Tower of Pisa wouldn't even begin to describe it !
You've just made your own argument there Nigel as to why the shot was taken with the wrong lens. Yes, the tower would have leaned massively with straight water and yes the water leans massively with a straight tower! Either way the shot could not be right 'in camera' and can't be right afterwards because too many compromises have to be made.

I really like these Nigel, except for the last one which you've probably included for comparison purposes.

I think these are head and shoulders above the set you posted of Swanage Harbour, the colours are better, the compositions are better and the light is better. The only slight negative for me is that they look a little over-sharpened, probably fine for printing but a bit too edgy on my monitor.

The first four are all good with my favourites being 3 and 4.

Thank you to everyone for the comments so far, I still have a lot of images to go through from this shoot; it was one of those days when I felt things were 'right' for some reason. I think it was because I was on my own and had time to think about what I was doing!

There are some lovely angles with good light - I think the best shot is 8. Long and Winding Road, which is so well laid out, but has a very good tonal balance. 7. Spiderman is weaker I think tonally - I'd reduce the sky brightness a bit, and see if there's extra highlights to pull out from the distant ground areas. 5. Preparing the Ropes is a striking image, although in a rather unnatural way - the infocus centre areas look a little too sharp - the people certainly do, at least for this web size display - and the woman with the blue top looking your way does not look very impressed with what you're up to!
Thank you for the detailed comments Nigel. I agree with what you are saying and noticed the 'sharpness' of number 8 too. This is due to the lens used (DA*50-135) which is extremely sharp when stopped down just a tad. I haven't applied any particular sharpening to this image that is any different to the others and I do try to keep it to a pretty low level anyway.

What a fantastic set of landscapes David. You and your colleagues who live in and around the Derbyshire Peak District are doing a fantastic job for the local Tourist Board.
Sheffield was my dad's birthplace and when I was a little boy, aged six, I stayed with an aunt and older cousin (he was 12) in Fullwood at Sheffield. One day he took me on a walk over the hills to Hathersage in Derbyshire. It was a great adventure but it seemed a very long walk and when we got there I was totally exhausted. We came back to Sheffield by train.

Thank you David, much appreciated! Fulwood to Hathersage is quite a walk, I'm not surprised you were tired! It is a really beautiful area to walk and is quite accessible in comparison to some of the other upland areas of the UK, in particular the place where I started the walk on Sunday is really a stones throw from the urban areas of upper Sheffield (Fulwood, Redmires, Dore). It is great in the Winter Snow, but can get very wild up there!

I've seen this one before Maria and thought it was lovely then. It's still lovely now and it shows that this 'is what you like to do best'.

Yes, sometimes, it depends on what I'm taking pictures of and the weather conditions. Abroad, in a sunny environment it is a valuable tool.

What was the intention? ... I used the lens to capture a big space encompassing a naturally rounded and curvey environment, a capture that would display all the key elements visable to a bystander glancing around and give a sense of the character of the place. I expected the viewer, as I did myself, to accept the effects caused by the lens, which exaggerate the shapes of the objects and natural bay curvature, and take it all in without demanding a physically / geometrically accurate reproduction ..... the reponse I quoted from John suggests that was the way they were in fact interpreted .... ?
But surely Nigel you would accept that the water just looks plain odd? The way it is shown is not 'natural bay curvature' at all! I know we will never agree on this but a much better result would have been achieved by using say a 28mm lens and stitching images together?

BTW, I think Mr. B's image above is an excellent result, but it must have taken a lot of work to get it like that.

I've also been following this with interest and you may have read my long comments on page 1!

To me, the images in this thread demonstrate how important it is to get things as right as possible 'in camera'. I know the distortions are the result of the lens, but if the objective of the shot is to take landscape shots and not intentionally distorted images, then the right tools must be used in the first place, as anything else ends up being an unacceptable compromise, as Algi's corrections demonstrate above.

I can't agree with John's comments:

....because the results of the images don't demonstrate a good feel for the subject matter IMO.

I agree with JVS in that you simply cannot produce an acceptable image where it looks as though a body of water is pouring out of the left hand side, unless it is a waterfall or an abstract shot, neither of which these images are.

...the Edge being Stanage Edge and the surrounding area at the Sheffield side of the Derbyshire Peak District. This is one of my favourite places and I am lucky to live quite close by, so it is 'easy access' for me. These are a mixture of the K-3 with 12-24 lens and the K-5IIs with both the Sigma 17-70 and the Pentax DA*50-135.

Hi Matt

I am very impressed with both the website and the quality of the work presented on it. Superb stuff.

I had no 'juddering' or any other issues, I suspect this is as much down to the internet connection and the PC being used to view the website as it is to anything else.

Best wishes
David

I like the intent of the third image Maria, but for me there needs to be an area that is a bit sharper. I also wonder whether a light vignetting around the edge would help to focus the eye a bit more, as it is I tend to find myself wandering all over the image, not knowing exactly which bit to look at. I think you have done others similar to this one that have worked out better.

Best wishes
David
