A Set From The Edge

...the Edge being Stanage Edge and the surrounding area at the Sheffield side of the Derbyshire Peak District. This is one of my favourite places and I am lucky to live quite close by, so it is 'easy access' for me. These are a mixture of the K-3 with 12-24 lens and the K-5IIs with both the Sigma 17-70 and the Pentax DA*50-135.

Super set David

What a fantastic setting, great set

What a fantastic set of landscapes David. You and your colleagues who live in and around the Derbyshire Peak District are doing a fantastic job for the local Tourist Board.
Sheffield was my dad's birthplace and when I was a little boy, aged six, I stayed with an aunt and older cousin (he was 12) in Fullwood at Sheffield. One day he took me on a walk over the hills to Hathersage in Derbyshire. It was a great adventure but it seemed a very long walk and when we got there I was totally exhausted. We came back to Sheffield by train.

Its a good idea to show a set exporing around a small area as its very informative to see the same objects (like the 'edge' rock formations here) from different viewpoints, so well done - I get a great sense of the place. I also like your inclusion of some people, perhaps by necessity, but you've made it work mostly as they complement things by showing what actually happens here!

There are some lovely angles with good light - I think the best shot is 8. Long and Winding Road, which is so well laid out, but has a very good tonal balance. 7. Spiderman is weaker I think tonally - I'd reduce the sky brightness a bit, and see if there's extra highlights to pull out from the distant ground areas. 5. Preparing the Ropes is a striking image, although in a rather unnatural way - the infocus centre areas look a little too sharp - the people certainly do, at least for this web size display - and the woman with the blue top looking your way does not look very impressed with what you're up to!

I love all these, David! One of my favourite walks - out along Stanage Edge and back along Bamford Edge, with gorgeous views all the way. I've always taken a pocket camera in the past - you've shown here what can be done with a proper one! Thanks!

Thank you to everyone for the comments so far, I still have a lot of images to go through from this shoot; it was one of those days when I felt things were 'right' for some reason. I think it was because I was on my own and had time to think about what I was doing!

Thank you for the detailed comments Nigel. I agree with what you are saying and noticed the 'sharpness' of number 8 too. This is due to the lens used (DA*50-135) which is extremely sharp when stopped down just a tad. I haven't applied any particular sharpening to this image that is any different to the others and I do try to keep it to a pretty low level anyway.

Thank you David, much appreciated! Fulwood to Hathersage is quite a walk, I'm not surprised you were tired! It is a really beautiful area to walk and is quite accessible in comparison to some of the other upland areas of the UK, in particular the place where I started the walk on Sunday is really a stones throw from the urban areas of upper Sheffield (Fulwood, Redmires, Dore). It is great in the Winter Snow, but can get very wild up there!

Nice set of a magical place David - especially when there is a mix of cloud cover and sun illuminating specific areas - such as image 8.

I must visit again before the weather gets too cold. Last time I was up there it was -6 with a wind chill factor making it feel more like -12. So cold I could barely turn the dials on the camera!
