Yes Andrew - I agree. The '10 feels like a proper tool - solid - almost like the old film cameras I used to use - and has a great control layout too. The K-r feels more like a compromise to keep the price down, its nicely made but its not like the '10. Whenever I pick up the '10, it almost feels like coming home!

I have to say though, with a big chunk of glass mounted on the front I welcome the lighter weight of the K-r!

But, I will never go back to the '10 for my live music photography. Its low light performance and AF are just so much better. I forgive the K-r everything for the results I can get with it. Oh, and the control layout is pretty reasonable - its taking me a little time to get used to but hey, I used the '10 for a long time before I got fluent with it!

Cheers,

davey.

I can certainly understand some disappointment. When I first got the K-r I tested it 'like for like' against the GX10 - tripod mounted, same lens, same shots, same settings etc. The K-r outclassed the '10 (in my opinion) in pretty much every way - but it was a close call. Put the pics next to each other and the K-r output was nicer - smoother with a better dynamic range. However, take the pics in isolation and I would never guess which camera took which pic.

So, for general use I'd say the K-r is an upgrade from the '10 - but not a massive upgrade.

As I mentioned above, the K-r beats the socks off the '10 for low light work and for autofocus accuracy - particularly in lower light. Mine does anyway!

Regarding shutter sound - I just got my K-r and 10' out together, set them both to 1/125th and fired both shutters. Sorry - they sound about the same volume to me!

Cheers, davey.

Wotcha,

I moved from a Samsung GX10 (the K10 equivalent) to a K-r. For what I photograph I'm very glad I did. But, I think its down to what you need from a camera really.

I only really shoot gigs so low light performance is vital and the K-r has much higher ISO, and for my purposes the higher ISO is very usable too (up to a point). Also, I have dodgy vision so auto focus performance is pretty important - with my key lenses the K-r is much faster and more accurate. So for me the K-r wins easily.

If I were you, I'd look at what you use your K10 for, make a list of features and functions that you must have and check how the K10 and the K-r compare. In some areas the K-r is massively better, in some areas they are similar, and as you say, the K10 was particularly solidly built which is an advantage.

Its a good idea to download the K-r manual and have a read pre purchase too. That helped me a great deal with my decision to upgrade.

Where are you located? You might find there is a forum member near to you with a K-r who'd be willing to let you take some test exposures and get a little hands on experience with their camera?

Cheers,

davey.

This is appalling behaviour by these 'officers'.

I'm no expert, but wasn't section 44 suspended last year?

Hi there,

I thought now was a good time to make my first post here - I can wish you all a happy new year!

Pentax and I go back quite a few years - I still have my first - a Spotmatic F. I don't run much film these days but its nice to have around. I've a couple of more recent Pentax film cameras but really prefer the 'F'.

For the last couple of years I've been using a Samsung GX10. Lovely camera and nicely built. But, its low light performance isn't great - this is vital to me as I mainly shoot live music events - often in badly lit clubs!

I decided a few days ago an upgrade was required. Part because of the usual difficulties shooting in very low light, and also because I have a progressive neurological condition - one symptom of which is a pretty interesting tremor - this is certainly not compatible with photographing performers moving around in the dark, with settings of F2.8 and 1/30th second! If I'm completely honest about it my tremor has progressed to a point where I haven't really been getting results I want on the GX10 - it was a choice of either upgrading so something more capable or giving up.

So, a couple of days ago I bought me a shiny new K-r. I'm rather hoping its impressive (on paper at least) low light performance will buy me a stop or two and perhaps even reduce the inevitable noise! Had a quick play with the new toy today. First impression is its really pretty straightforward - I always shoot manual and its layout of vital controls is quite similar to the GX10.

I think I might have struck lucky too. Auto focus is vital to me as I have damage to both eyes which isn't correctable. My lens of choice is a Sigma 50-150 F2.8. I bought it about 6 months ago and while it is capable of clear sharp results it has always back focussed badly - the best it can achieve is 'AutoNearlyFocus'! On first tests it appears my new K-r forward focusses badly - not good individually but perhaps this camera and lens are a match made in heaven! With maximum use of the camera's autofocus fine tune it's pretty close - only about a cm out - I might be able to live with that!

I tried the live view with its sensor based contrast af - alas not compatible with my lens. Tried my Sigma on my new camera and on the shop demo body, also tried the shop copy of my lens on both bodies and the contrast af has a 100% failure rate in all combinations even though it works nicely on the kit lens!

So there you go. There's a little about davey. I'm looking forward to chatting on the forum - I'm sure there is much I can learn.

If you want to see any of my pics there are a few on my flickr page:

Thanks for reading. All the best for 2011, and speak soon,

davey.
