That's assuming that converting to JPEG needs no further input from the photographer, but, depending on image size required, the amount of sharpening, for example, will vary, as will the parameters for that sharpening.

I think you're describing things from the point of view of an entirely different workflow. I've got six articles here on PU that describe a very simple workflow and which summarise what I might do. See the articles section and you'll know straight away if we're talking about different approaches.
Hi John,

As smeggy has indicated, you can crate export presets, or you can set compression, image size, sharpening individually and manually.

However, I started talking about exporting photos to Flickr, in which case I am talking about sending full size (after any cropping) at 100% quality. And so I can virtually be assured that any initial set up will suffice for the vast majority of shots, hence the ease of use.

I'm afraid I can't check if we are using totally different workflows by reading the articles as I am not a User Plus subscriber. What I would be interested in, though, is how your sharpening differs for different sizes of images.

I can import and export ok but on exporting I have to type in where I want the output stored and I soon got fed up with that.
If I import from a directory I'd like to export to the same directory with perhaps the option of a new folder, not have to browse to where I want to be each time. am sure it's a very good program, it is reassuringly expensive Now I await the How To ( for 3.x )
At the risk of us sounding repetetive () you don't have to type in the folder where you want it to go, unless it's a new location. You can choose the "same folder as original" (which is just an option), or a specific folder. You can also specify a subfolder if you want to.

Yes, but John, all that has been done beforehand for each image. Why would you want to do that on output?

All the publishing process does is convert your already processed images to jpegs, with a sharpening for output to screen if you so desire, and then send it all to Flickr.

It in no way replaces the fine adjustments that you have described that have been done previously in Develop.

You can select the sharpening to be applied on output. Why would you want to adjust levels?

Thanks, Stan.

I used to do it that old-fashioned way too!
Sorry, Stan, my reply could be seen as being a bit flippant. It wasn't meant to be directed at you.

But for those people who find exporting a difficult process, Lightroom saves you all that trouble. Once you set up Flickr in Lightroom...and it takes 2 minutes.....then all you have to do is drag any photos you have editted and want to publish to Flickr into a collection and then click on Publish, and then Lightroom will create all the jpegs in the background and send them to Flickr. No need to create jpegs of your own before uploading them.

It seems to me, having looked back at this thread, that many of the problems people foresee in using Lightroom are complete misconceptions. I have found it easy to use, and have never read a book or manual, just learnt as I went on. I really don't see why some have such negative vibes on it.

Quick question.....how do people who don't use Lightroom get their photos on Flickr or Photobucket or whatever (if you do)?

Yes, but what about the answers?

I hardly ever use the clamp. Once in a blue moon, you'd say. Actually, I don't use autofocus all that much either. The chances of me causing damage to the lens is, I would say, negligible. I don't know what this worry is about, to be honest.

But if the clamp is "commonly damaged" I would, too, like to hear about it.

Be aware that the WR version does not have an aperture ring, but the non-WR version does. I love my non-WR version, by the way. Superb lens.
