This image - my 3rd picture while 'un-crating' it - is straight out of the camera untouched and taken in low light. (click to see original)

BTW the grain on the monitor is the finish on the mac mostly
Video is brilliant! especially in good light (as always). I took a picture of my daughter on a swing and watched it full screen on my 26 inch display - fab!
I can't give comparisons except against my steam driven Sony Ericson (given to me) and it blows that out of the water.
The touch-screen focusing is a joy to use.
Everything is just so slick and well thought out.
I am currently having some issues with texting right now - but I am certain that is me not knowing how to use the keyboard.
I have no interest in trying to big this thing up, I needed it's display more than anything and that alone is worth the price. BTW, I read my first e-book last night in bed

I can give you some therapy for that Mac/Jobs hatred £60/hr or more cheaply, just let it go man - it's really eating you up.
Mine works fine
Jobs can say what he likes. I couldn't give a damn.

It is a joy to use, hooks up effortlessly with my Imac (which is also sublime), email account up and running in about 30 seconds and notifications on the fly. I am super critical, but the screen is fabulous! the camera - with its touch-screen focusing is super-responsive with fab results, the video - has blown me away. I now have a walking portfolio of my images looking utterly fabulous - if I can't sell my photography now I'll give up. oh... and it can make calls.
If the signal drops, I'll happily move my little finger
Last and not least, it feels gorgeous - really beautiful, solid and well-made.

Just had a look at Lumiquest - That takes me back, I must have been there once. Maybe I got my idea from the 'Big Bounce' as that is essentially what my reflector does but I point it down so it illuminates in front of the lens.

Just been doing some tests using a ball point pen nib as the 'eye'
I tried my big sheet of paper, a 2 litre milk bottle and naked flash. The bottle was bright, but the paper reflector (like a roof out over the lens) won hands down with a lovely soft, shapely catch light on the 'eye' with a pleasant gradient and good lighting around the rest of the nib.

I then tried some lens mods.
the most extreme was 42mm extension tubes then the 100 macro with a 28mm reversed onto the end. (28mm opened wide, macro stopped down to f16) this produced a 4.5x macro (just over 4mm showing in the frame). This is unusable outside but perfectly usable in the studio and pretty good quality.
The best combination for flies is just the macro and extension tubes and flash with paper reflector.
I'll make a 9 inch soft box diffuser next
.
Here's the biggest magnification (uncropped) and using the milk bottle. I only took one snap. notice the line of focus looping up over the nib and down the other side. it's about a 5th of the depth of the nib

For my personal macro style tho', I don't think it would be as good as a big reflector, particularly when camera mounted.
Having the reflector hanging out over the front of the lens or hand held over the subject is much more versatile and controllable.
You need a really big diffuser (like the sky) to make it look natural.
The milk bottle is like a Stofen but much bigger (hangs out over the lens) and it's free
What I might consider is a small soft box diffuser. 6 to 9 inches would be a good compromise between good lighting and being too clumsy.

I don't see how this helps the OP's question.
So Apply have got their PR all wrong... so what?
I reiterate that in the real world - as opposed to your world of well... what exactly? The iPhone 4 is a masterful piece of kit, especially for photographers. I already love mine and it HASN'T DROPPED A SIGNAL YET.
