Just flicked through some examples and the noise seems to be quite a problem, especially on moon shots where you need to get right in.

I see. Pixel density it is then.
So if I can mount my lens in front of one of those Nokia 40 MP sensors it would be awesome?

Can someone enlighten me as to the difference between mounting a 300 on a small sensor, and just cropping the image on a conventional shot with that lens? I appear to be missing something here. Pixel density ?
All I know is cropping is a very poor way to 'zoom in'.

My most used lens is a prime - DFA 100mm. Not because it's a macro, but because the quality is stunning.
I use if for bugs, portraits and fast-moving pets; in all areas, it excels. Blisteringly sharp, beautiful bockeh, making the 55-300 almost redundant as an outdoor portrait lens.
My second most used lens is the FA 50 1:4 for sharpness, speed (f1:4) and optical quality (sharpness and DOF).
I have zooms from fisheye to 55-300 and the wide variants get used regularly, but as above, generally at their extremes and always with the knowledge that the images will need a little work.

There's a great line in The Incredibles - 'They keep creating new ways to celebrate mediocrity...' ( proms, not the shoot )
Shots are nice, looks like you did a good job. Some seem a little sharp for portraits, but I'm sure they will print well.

I have begun using the focus select much more now as it really can make a difference with lenses like the 50 1:4.
I depends on your style of movement but it definitely affects the focus point on critical things like portraits.
I would like to see a much more intuitive selection system on the front tho', as trying to get my finger between my face and the back buttons is a pain

He he, not sure what point you are trying to make, but the sky from the mobile is considerably better than both 645 shots.
However, the mobile does need a level in the view finder!

OMG, I think I would kill (certainly kidnap) for the chance to use that piece of kit on my shoot this afternoon. I'm nearly crying...
Time for a cup of tea and a hobnob.
